ScouterPaul
I've been reviewing the Summer Camp info. concerning merit badges. We will be taking 7 first year Scouts to summer camp and I've been reviewing the merit badges being offered in order to present the Scouts with a list that they would be eligable for. The Camp guide has the following statement for the Hiking Merit Badge: "Scouts must complete requirement 5 (one 10 mile hike) before camp." My copy of the Boy Scout Reqirements 2002 has the following for requirement 5 of the Hiking Merit Badge: "Take five hikes, each on a different day, and each of 10 continuous miles. I read this as 5 10 mile hikes." Is this correct?
Mike Long
You are correct, five hikes of 10 miles each that when mileage is added together total 50 miles. I would think that the camp has a typo in their documents that needs addressing.

eisely
I suggest calling the people running the camp and clarifying with them what they mean. Hiking merit badge cannot be completed in an ordinary summer camp session of one week. Boys may be able to start the merit badge there, but not finish it there. I suggest focusing on eagle required badges that can be completed in the session. We now record "miles hiked" in troopmaster for each boy so as not to lose track of this information, recognizing that it probably will take more than one year to complete all the requirements. Double Eagle
Having taught this two times in the past (whew!) The five 10-mile hikes are separate but each hike must be completed the same day. The on 20-miler is also in one day. The last time, we did the 20 miler in the Adironacks and left early, 6:00am. We hiked, messed around, took scenic breaks, and didn't turn it into a race. A real enjoyable and over-before-you-know-it hike. Total hiking merit badge miles 70.(This message has been edited by Double Eagle)
bt01
I would not have any first year campers take hiking merit badge.(if they are 11 years old). Have then do something more at there age group. Have them go for some of the more easier merit badges. If they want to go for a required merit badge; have them take swimming or first aid.
