SemperParatus
It dawned on me this weekend while cabin camping that there was not a Yu-Gi-Oh card in site. In fact, I think its been at least 6 months since I have seen them on a trip. Can we pronounce this fad dead or is there still life in other pockets of the country? For those in California, what are you seeing as the next scourge from Japan that I can expect to invade our camping trips? Proud Eagle
I don't even really know what that is, but I certainly hope it has died.
Its Me
I don't think it is dead yet. There is still the Yu-Gi-Oh show on Cartoon network. My 3rd grade son still plays it. But at about 4th grade it dies down in other boys and I haven't seen it in the 5th grade. I do think it is on the decline. At least its a quiet game. VAordeal
being in the 8th grade none of the kids in my patrol, including myself, play that ridiculous game! And finally all the 6th graders stoppped! Its dead in my troop! Hooray!
cajuncody
It is still alive here but nearing its end I hope. both my son's have the duel thingy that goes on the arm but it seems that Wallyworld has plenty left over from Christmas. Usually that is a good sign it is on the way out. Kristi
johndaigler
Now, you guys aren't saying that your leaders don't sit around after lights out and play a quiet game of cards, are you???
Trevorum
At a troop meeting last month, one of the patrol programs was "games". It turned out they meant card games! They went over the rules of several games, broke into groups, passed out cards, and then the whole troop practiced card games for 30 minutes. It looked like a casino! Everyone had fun though and it was a well recieved program. However, we had Webelos IIs visiting that night and I had to explain to the parents that "usually we do scout skills"... OldGreyEagle
I beleive Yu-Gi-Oh is dead, the best part is that Poker killed it. Last campout not a Yu-Gi-Oh card to be seen, they were all playing Texas Hold'em. Trevorum, I see no need to apologize, I mean when I was a kid Poker was considered a Life's Skill if not a Scouting one
EagleInKY
Poker and card games have become a big thing for our guys as well. Question, what do you allow them to "gamble" with. Our guys usually just play for fun, but sometimes they play for toothpicks or whatever they find. I have always drawn the line at money or anything of real value. SemperParatus
Poker definitely seems to be the game of choice today. Some of our guys are really into it. They have those really nice heavy chips. The kind I would never buy. They have asked me to play, but I have declined...something doesn't feel right about an adult playing poker with minors. Am I wrong?
Trevorum
hmmm... interesting question, Semper. I'm not into cards and neither (it seems) are any other adults in our troop, so I can't speak from experience. However, I could see playing cards with some of the high school fellows in the Venture patrol. I don't think I'd sit down with the younger ones though, even for M&Ms.
OldGreyEagle
Its one thing to sit down and play games with the scouts, any game, and then another one altogether if you are actually gambling. And it doesnt matter if its matches, M&Ms or whatever. If I saw an actual card game with money, or other commodity being wagered, I would ask what point of the Scout Oath and Law was being honed. If they want to keep track of mythical points, chips, etc thats one thing, but actual money, no. Then gain, am I being inconsistent?
Cubmaster-Fred
Not Dead!!!! On our Packs trip to the newspaper plant last weekend, at least half of the boys had the cards with them. It was alright though it kept them quiet during the ride there and home. Fred
Trevorum
OGE, I agree. Can't say I remember this issue addressed in G2SS or any other policy guide, but gambling with real $$ just doesn't seem to go with scouting. (But that's just my own take - those in the Boulder Dam Area Council might disagree)
CA_Scouter
We completely banned Yu-Gi-Oh from our troop because we consider it to be a form of gambling, and because we had two boys square off at a campout in a dispute over ownership of a card that one of them had lost in one of the games they play. There were also many heated arguments between some of the boys, so we really considered it to be inappropriate at a scouting event. We also temporarily suspended poker, because we had an incident with some scouts refusing to participate in activities planned during a campout. We may consider lifting the ban if I can get leadership to propose an acceptable plan on use and responsibility. But I haven't seen Yu-Gi-Oh in a while. Thank Goodness!
