namu35950
Ok everyone, thinking of a cool trip for the scouts to take in 2013. Had the idea of a working dude ranch where the boys can learn about horses, cattle, and general how the west was years ago. But I dont want it to be a vacation, I was thinking also of having the scouts do some work, cattle drive, cleaning stalls, etc. What is everyones thought on this, and if you have done this before, what did you like or dislike? and where did you go? Trevorum
Shoveling manure is no one's idea of adventure. I would not recommend that. However, several Scout camps have excellent equestrian programs. Buffalo Trails come to mind, as does Philmont. I'm sure there are many more. Our troop has done this several times and the fellows always have a terrific exerience. These programs generally fill up quickly - 12 to 18 months in advance. pchadbo
Not sure where you are but Camp Bell on the Griswold Scout Reservation in NH offers horseback riding (and some MB associated with) and is a patrol style camp, this may be what you want.
