ntrog8r
((Edited to repair links)) I always thought our mascot was... a Scout. The one image associated with Boy Scouting is a Scout - with or without a hiking staff, neckerchief, campaign hat, uniform pants, etc. - but always a recognizable Scout: http://www.osagecohistoricalmuseum.com/scouts.html http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cQxTVEjThKE/SOieUqoP5WI/AAAAAAAAAnc/_6FonzPTsnc/s1600-h/Boy_Scout_Memorial-27527.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Boy_scout_godollo_sculptor_Lorinc_Siklody.jpg Kind of like what they TRIED to do with the postage stamp that looked like a hiker, (http://scouting.org/100years/100years/100YearsStamp.aspx) but NOT necessarily a Scout... Of course if I were looking for a BSA mascot, it would have to be an American animal - and probably a mammal - who wants a jellyfish or slug or termite! Ooh, The star-nosed mole! http://ugly-animals.blogspot.com/2011/01/star-nosed-mole.html OK, OK; just kidding! I'd probably go with a bison. Though Vulpes Vulpes, or a more general fox, would be more "international". skeptic
Actually, the wolf is a rational choice because of the history of the founders. Seton was called Grey Wolf and is still considered to have done some of the best work on the Canadian wolf. B.P. was the "wolf that never sleeps" among other things. Of course, Seton would have had a wolf rather than an eagle. Probably many other critters someone can validate for the role.
Life-Scout-Ldr
Okay, maybe it is just me, but the obvious animal mascot choice for the BSA would be an American Bald Eagle. That is highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts and in Venturing it still fits with the Silver Eagle award. Perhaps have him with an arrow of light at all times. I think the mascot should be the ideal of striving for the highest achievements, and if he is used then he should also embody what it means to have made those achievemnets. If we want to include the Quartermaster award for sea scouting then an anchor needs to be somewhere, maybe as a necklace or something like that. Cub scouts have mascots for each level until they reach webelos. Webelos however can choose a patrol mascot like boy scouts, and of course boy scouts have patrol mascots. OA lodges often have mascots. Several troops I have been a part of have a troop mascot. I don't know about venturing, but they could develop a mascot as well. Essentially I think a mascot should embody the ideas of what a group is about. What do you all think about the BSA mascot? We could call him Eddie. Eamonn
OK, I know that I'm biased. Still I like my Golden Retriever idea. Goldie's are known to be playful and real characters, but are also known to be wonderful Guide Dogs and seeing eye dogs. Have to admit that while I don't know anything about video games, maybe a video game hero character might fit the bill? This might appeal to Boy Scouts. I'd like to see something that maybe had a little muscle, nothing that could be taken as wimpy. Can't remember where I read it, but seem to think I seen where GEICO spent $720 million on advertising in one year. While we all know that membership happens at the local level. I think a little support from National wouldn't hurt. Some of the ideas and things that they have come up with are very good. Shame is that they seem unwilling to put any money into advertising. Maybe it's too easy to cry in the beer and point the finger at local Councils for not doing enough? Ea.
