Shriscov
I almost thought of posting this under Uniforms or Girl Scouts. Has anyone else noticed the commercial with the SVU (CVU?) and the boy's boxy car wins the little wooden car derby? The uniforms are tan with what looks like Brownie vests. I guess no complaints from BSA, but what do girl scouts think. Car brand left off on purpose--but I used to drive one.
Engineer61
Yeah, I've seen it. My guess it that uniform is left purposefully unspecific so that they car manufacturer doesn't get sued by BSA or GSA.
moosetracker
Yes, I read somewhere in rules that the uniform can not be worn for things like a costume, or in a political event etc.. there was a small list. Since then when ever I watch a show they have something similar to Boy scouts, but they alter the costume a bit, and the name is slightly altered. My guess is BSA never authorizes the use of their trademark (unlike pepsi or other products that might even pay for you to advertise for them in your show.) Trevorum
I've often wondered if there is a blanket policy at BSA forbidding authorization of *any* fictional depiction. We never do seem to see genuine "product placement" even when there would seem to be no apparent conflict with BSAs values. For example, a recent episode of NCIS featured a group of "Youth Rangers" in tan uniforms with neckerchiefs, shoulder flag emblem, shoulder tabs, etc. The fellows had a fairly high profile in the episode, were well portrayed, and I could not see what BSA might have objected to. Shriscov
I can understand wanting to keep uniform out of public domain and thus turning down most depictions of scouting. Satire is allowable and not infringing, though, which must explain why "The Onion" ran a piece about scouts and it looked like the real thing. jhankins
So Pixar owes BSA for Wilderness Explorers, and Sweat Lodge 54? rofl
Greaves
Spider-Man 3 has Cub Scouts in it. (when it's Spider-Man Day, they are on the stage & obviously, recognizably, real Cub Scout uniforms.)
GernBlansten
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/canteen-boy-and-the-scoutmaster/999462/ I guess this is covered by the satire exclusion.
moxieman
And I'm guessing that Indiana Jones wasn't a Life Scout after-all in the third Indy movie, huh? (This message has been edited by moxieman)
evmori
I think that is suppose to represent Indian Guides, not Scouting. They have pinewoods, too.
John-in-KC
If you think there is rhyme and reason over time to how BSA licensed the uniform to Hollywood producers ... May I introduce you to some Alabama wetlands I have for sale?
boomerscout
And I'm guessing that Indiana Jones wasn't a Life Scout after-all in the third Indy movie, huh? Harrison Ford was a Life Scout. That's why Spielberg made Indie a Life. Ford was also a merit badge counselor for reptiles
SctDad
Indiana jones cannot be wrong if Harrison Ford really was a scout. BTW that SNL movie was just wrong!!!!
jhankins
National has a whole division entitled "The office of corporate alliances" meant solely to establish relationships with organizations to help promote BSA's agenda. Steve Emerick is in charge, and he's been trying to get companies to work with the BSA to promote scouting in a positive light. I remember for a while they were trying to get Scouts in Action on Wheaties boxes, and trying to get Coke to do a bottle. My opinion --I honestly think the car company in question MIGHT have been trying to make a point about boys cross-dressing in a girl scout uniform. He was involved with the Jamboree show during the year they rolled it out.
