OldGreyEagle
Was asked to do a University of Scouting presentation on Sea Scouting, not sure why, but there are no ships in the Council, where can I find National numbers of Ships and Sea Scout youth/adults? Eamonn
I have asked the very same question. So far I have never been able to get a good answer from the people who should know this sort of thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Scout Has the number as being 15,000. But I don't know how they came up with it? Eamonn
Eagle92
NOT ENOUGH! From this website: http://www.seascout.org/ In a speech to Juniata Valley Council in November 06, [2007] Charlie Holmes said the number of Sea Scouts was 7,000. Assuming the number he quoted was correct, that suggests the it's closer to 3% (actually 2.8%)[of total Venturers]. maybe I can work my mojo on this topic and ask my old friend Keith about it? EDITED: I needed to add the year 2007 in brackets as that info was in the discussion, but not in the quote selected. sailingpj
At a event a month or so ago there was a boatswains meeting run by Keith Christopher, he said that there are 6,700 and something Sea Scouts.
Eagle92
Sailing, Thanks for the update. Keith is one of the few professionals I know who is about the Scouts, or Sea Scouts in this case. Good bloke.
Chug
Eammon: The Wiki figures includes Girl Scouts. Does US Girl Scouting have a Sea Scout element? I know here in the UK we have c.10,000 Sea Scouts in c.400 groups.(This message has been edited by Chug)
Eagle92
From looking at the GSUSA website, I would say no to the question of Sea Scouting in GS. However the BSA's Sea Scouting is coed as it is a subset of Venturing. Pity b/c Sea Scouting is the 2nd oldest program in the BSA, being founded in 1912. Chug
Mrs Chugs group is a Sea Scout group, and it celebrates its centenary this year. The Girl Guides (UK equivalent of Girl Scouts) ran a Sea Ranger programme until 1973. I thought that was the end of Sea Rangers, but apparently some of them split from the Guides and carried on http://www.searangers.org.uk/html/history.html
Eagle92
Chug, I spent some wonderful time with 5th Deal (Sea Scouts) When I was on the Service Crew at Kingsdown International Scout Campsite. Great folks who let a guest tag along
Buffalo Skipper
I have heard (not in our area) of Girl Scout counselors chartering all girl Sea Scout ships; these are frequently called "Mariners" or "Mariner ships." If this is true, they would be registered Sea Scouts (BSA) so including them also as Girl Scouts would be double counting. Or so it would seem. Chug
Eagle 92: Deal is only a few mile away from where I live, and I have camped at Kingsdown on numerous occasions,(It was where I did my woodbadge course)
Eagle92
Chug, Did you have a WB reunion at Kingsdown in '95 that went to the King's Head? If so then you saw me as I was the "crazy Yankee" 0on crew that year
Kahuna
If local experience in two councils is any guide, there is no way of knowing how many there are. I'm a vice commodore and we are constantly finding units have disappeared overnight. If you visit an active unit, the numbers you see are nothing like the numbers on council rosters. Whatever figure you come up with is just a guess.
Chug
Eagle92: No I didn't go to that reunion, although I know the King's Head well.
emb021
"Does US Girl Scouting have a Sea Scout element?" they used to. It was called "Mariner Girl Scouts". for all practical purposes the program is dead. They don't have manuals or insignia.
