Troop 168 Reseda, Calif

Greetings

My scouting history was a long time ago.

Cub Scout Pack 168 Reseda, Calif about 1960-62.

Boy Scout Troop 168 Reseda, Calif 1963-1965.

Post 117 Reseda, Calif 1966-1969.

I was inducted into OA in 1966. The ordeal ceremony was at Camp Whitsett in Kern County, Calif. I edited the Walika 228 newsletter for a couple years when the San Fernando Valley Council offices were in Van Nuys.

In Boy Scouts I was a bugler. I was playing trumpet in junior high so it wasn't a big jump. When I got the merit badge for bugling I played 32 bugle calls from sheet music. First time the merit badge councilor had seen that. I though it was pretty cool at the time.

In 1967 I was in the staff-in-training program at Camp Whitsett as part of the rifle range staff. That was alot of fun. I attended Camp Whitsett every year from 1963 to 1967. In 1967 I was 16, got my first job, first car and first girlfriend. Things have gone downhill ever since:-)

Hello Don!

Reseda? No kidding? I also grew up in the Valley and am a brother from old Walika, Ordeal in 68! Our troop also went to Whitsett in 65 and 66. That was great camp! We went to Chawanakee the next several years - also a great camp. Did you go to Reseda HS? My dad taught there in the early 60s.

Are you still in Scouting?

Welcome to the forums!

Reseda HS Class of Winter 1970.

Basically 66-69. What subject did your dad teach?

Haven't been in Scouting since 1969. I do still have uniforms and some other stuff I need to dig out and photograph one of these days soon.

Thanks for the welcome.

My dad taught art there but by 1964 he was at LAVC. You really should get out your old stuff. I'll bet you have no idea what a mint Walika flap is worth these days! ;) Have you thought of getting back into Scouting? There are lots of ways for us old guys to help the young fellows. I'll bet your current lodge would give you a warm welcome.

We still need someone from Cleveland and ECR...

Does anyone remember Cory Woolson, who was our Chapter Secretary way back then?

Since EagleSon is off to Mizzou this fall, this is what I'm listening to these days...

(Those were taken while Marching Mizzou (which he'll be in this fall) was flying down to San Anton for the Big 12 fiasco.

Oh, well... we were first out of the chute on that best of all bowl days, New Years Day in the Cotton Bowl.

I attended Camp W from 1965-1967. I hiked the Silver Knapsack and Powderhorn trails. On the Silver Knapsack hike, I wondered off of the trail with another scout. The troop divided in 3 groups when two scouters aquired diarea. I was trying to catch up to the lead group when the trail I was on disappeared as the sun went down. We retired on a hill near a stream. The next day we wandered until evening when we were discovered by an Tule Indian Family that gave us a ride to a building that had a telephone. Their Chief call the Sheriff and we were driven back to Camp Whitsett. To Receive my Silver Knapsack metal I had to finsh the hike from where I got off of the trail.

Hello Don,

I received my Vigil from Walika in 1972 and as a SM took a Troop to Whitsett in 1970. I was the SM of Troop 141 at Edwards AFB. Later in June of 1973, I had the honor of directing Wood Badge course "Western 1" at Whitsett in June of 1973. Rather to scary to think that was 35 years ago!

All you guys from the same area is interesting; just another reflection of what I have heard of the strength of the old San Fernando Valley Council and lodge. I reentered scouting as an adult a bit later in Canoga Park; but it was now the Great Western Council. Met a lot of die-hard SFC guys the year and half I was there. I did my first adult training at Camp Slauson as part of the infamous Patron Group; still have my flag, neckerchief, slide, and buckle. Served on the staff later, before moving to Ventura County Council in 1977. It was a story told by (Mike,?; old age again)Smith at the Spring COR in 1976 that rehooked me, as I was visiting. Since then, I have been to Whitsett with my troop in Ventura and reintroduced myself to Mike (?). Still was a great story teller. There were some serious backpackers in that Patron group. The ones I still remember were Bob White and Mike Brandt. Not sure if Mike ever made his planned trip to Everest, but he sure talked about it.

Small world isn't it. I am leaving for Tahquitz on Sunday; never been there. Found out it is only a couple miles from the site of my only official scout camp as a boy, Camp Arataba (now Benneville Pines). Plan on making a visit if I can, just for memory's sake.
