Be_Prepared
Well - supposedly he said: Man, Nation, Maiden Please call it Baden. Further, for Powell Rhyme it with Noel
cubbingcarol
I have heard the same except the last line was this... Rhyme it with soul.
Miki101
His late daughter, the Hon, Betty Clay, informed me some years ago that BP himself rhymed it was Noel (or soul if you like). However, her husband, Gervas, always pronounced it as rhyming with towel. The ditty is: Man, Matron, Maiden, Please rhyme it with Baden. And as for Powell Please rhyme it with Noel. scoutldr
Ok, I'm confused...is it "Nole" as in "Noel Coward" or "No-ell" as in 'the first Noel"?
Miki101
The Christmas "Noel" has umlautes making it "No-el". No umlauts is in the name "Noel" as in the playwright. BP refers to the latter.
ntrog8r
Though I have always heard and used the "towel" version, a Google search (pronounce baden powell) bings a myriad sites, not related to Scouting, that say it is "POE' l". This should be in the Handbook!
