eisely
Chaplain's aide is a youth position that is often overlooked or not emphasized. I was trying to do a little research on "scout's own" and came across the following item on the BSA national web site. I had not seen these requirements before. Anybody have any thoughts on this? 1. The chaplain aide must be mature and sensitive and have earned the respect and trust of his fellow Scouts. 2. The chaplain aide must be at least a First Class Scout. 3. The chaplain aide must have received or be working on the requirements leading to the age-appropriate religious emblem for his faith.
scottteng
We have an excellent chaplain's aide who is not a first class scout but who provides an excellent non sectarian service for our troop. The only difference is is that he does this because he likes it not because he needs it for his next rank. He is in regular contact with our appointed by COR chaplain. Why rock the boat? baschram645
Actually it says qualifications not requirements, although each one says must be. Oddly enough there are no qualifications or requirements for Troop Chaplain.
Flyingfish
I was under the impression that the COR Chaplain typically was a member of the clergy or the clergy's designate. Unfortunately, the Chaplain and the Chaplain's aide are probably the two most overlooked positions in a troop. Unless you are chartered to assertive church, your troop probably doesn't have either of them. Just remember to make sure the 12 point of the Scout Law is not the last one your troop thinks of. Trevorum
A unit Chaplain may indeed be a member of the clergy but this is NOT required. A Chaplain can be any registered adult.
tagguy
I have a 2nd class 12 year old who regularally serves as an alter server (politically correct term for alter boy),and is starting Ad Altari Dei.I am seriously considering him as chaplains aide, but would like to confer with him,and his folks beforehand. His dad is interested in the troop chaplain position. Is there any resources, such as scout vespers, mass intentions,non-donominational services that can be obtained as references,and/or troop material? Here are some specific resources: Roles of the Chaplain and Chaplains Aide: http://www.scouting.org/media/relationships/chaplainrole.aspx 2008-2011 important faith-based dates: http://www.scouting.org/media/relationships/religiouscalendar.aspx The Manual for Chaplains Aides http://www.scouting.org/media/relationships/manualforchaplainsandaides.aspx Scout Sabbath/Scout Sunday helps: http://www.scouting.org/media/relationships/ascoutisrevernt.aspx Reverence This pamhlet was adapted from the "Eagles Soaring High" faith resource used at Philmont Scout Ranch. Scouting has faith as a major element, but is not faith specific. If he cannot think outside the Roman Catholic box, he may not be ready for this position. That applies to any young man contemplating Chaplains Aide...
