The canteen I had lasted two decades before being accidentally kicked off the side of one of the presidential range peaks in the White Mountains. Way too far for me to climb down to get it. Nowadays, those in the Military buy civilian gear because it's usually much better than that issued to them (though never the cheapest). Joke in my troop growing was the following: "Government surplus, if it is designed to survive combat, it MAY survive Boy Scouts." Forgot to add, I am still using my used A.L.I.C.E. pack I got back in 1988/89. Oldest has used it too.
