CNYScouter
The Ship was gong to go to an indoor driving range for an activity in March but we just found out it closed and is out of business. They are now collecting ideas for another activity. In keeping with Scouting is a game not School spirit, what types of activates can you suggest for team building? They would like to keep this to a one day activity. We cant do things like a COPE course as early March is more like winter and it is later in March it is usually cold rainy and muddy outside. I have plenty of team building games but would like to suggest an activity that does this naturally.

Hiromi
CNYScouter, These links are loaded with ideas. One fun activity we do that is cheap and requires teamwork is simply hide and seek (Or we call it search and evade). You can let the scouts have cell phones so they can cover a larger area, or have to rely on hand signals alone. You could make it a search and rescue and involve first aide s well. ANother great one is geocaching and orienteering courses (with scavenger hunts). You could involve in such a game code breaking- riddle solving, rope use - sort of like a miny on the spot Klondike. You could either make the course yourself- or have the ship design a course. (they woul dprobably learn more and have more fun). I included the scenario to activites our unit did last year in my thread "All THings Pappy". It is the third Post. http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=181186&p=1 Have fun- I wish I had a Ship! OldGreyEagle
I am going to assume a few things, and Ed is right when you assume. You have a Sea Scout unit, by definition that means older youth. How about running an orienteering class, but by auto? It will take some prepararion, finding some 3 way intersections and then add some historical trivia about where Mrs O'Learys kicked the lantern over or something. The idea isnt to finish with the best time, but to hit all the stops. And proof of the stops is with a digital camera. Heck, they can even use their cell phones. You have a driver, a navigator and a few assistants for the questions
Bob White
We do a Winter "Academy" Weekend. We start with a formal dinner in dress uniforms. We do some drill work, we have a PowerPoint Sea Scout Jeopardy Game they play. We use a very cool sailing simulator software to run virtual races to learn reading the wind and choosing courses. We bring in outside speakers to instruct on boat handling and boating safety. We had the Coast Guard Auxillary come in last winter and we fired flare guns. We have courses on boat maintanence, and we have knot tying contests for prizes. The scouts have meetings for event planning, and in the evenings we watch boating related movies such as Master and Commander or films from the Horatio Hornblower series. We finish with a Landship ceremony.

Its Me
It may not rise to a Cope course but shared experiences have a lot of value too. Visiting a boat repair yard, or a make up an indoor canoe race using skate boards. Do a rain gutter regatta. Not challenging enough have an unlimited class, have them work in teams. Think teams, tactile experiences and competitions.
scoutingagain
I've never tried this, but it might be of interest to a ship's crew. Is there a Radio Controlled Sailing club near you? Or would you have enough $$ to buy a couple of RC Sailboat kits(I've found them starting around $125.)? Build a couple of RC Models and have a series of indoor match races ala America's Cup consortia at a local pool. Supply wind with some fans off to the side of the pool. (be sure their plugged into Ground Fault Circuit Interupter outlets) Something different. SA SA
