PeteM
Ham Roasted in a Watermelon.... Care to give more details? Sounds yummy.
insanescouter
ROFL .... this was just a weird example and now it has its own thread .... rofl more ... Basically you hollow out any kind of thick skin melon, put a ham inside of it, and slowly roast it.... My dad came up with the idea years ago, as a half joke, half serious idea, but never tried it. Now of course like most such ideas, I am sure others have thought of it too.... Scott Robertson http://insanescouter.org
PeteM
Scouters NEVER joke about food. I''ll give it a go and let you know.
Lisabob
Ah geez, if this works I want to know! We have a cook off coming up in a couple of months... Thank you, for a good laugh today, just thinking about the incredulous stares this could attract.
PeteM
I am guessing.... it is going to be a smoked (read that as pink)ham, right?(This message has been edited by PeteM)
scoutldr
Most cured hams are "pre-cooked", meaning heat and serve. The watermelon would provide a novel way of heating the ham directly on the coals while not drying it out or burning it. Sounds cool! I also like to wow the Tenderfeet by boiling water (or poaching an egg or cooking a sausage ball) in an orange peel...directly on the fire. OldGrayOwl
Have you tried to "wow" your Scouts by boiling water in a paper (not plastic) cup on on open fire? Cured Ham cooked in a melon...now THAT is something to try.
GernBlansten
Hey, survivorman boiled water in a plastic water bottle. Gotta try that next campfire.
scoutldr
Yup...the cup will burn down to the water level then stop. They think it''s magic!
BrentAllen
I wonder what burned watermelon rind smells like.... There used to be a country song about Watermelon Wine. You might end up with some of that as well. :-) Re: boiling water in a paper cup - the burning temperature of paper is 450 degrees F. and the boiling point of water is 212 degrees F. Do the math. :-)
local1400
Saw some Scouts use the ol'' half an orange to cook cake batter in. Wasn''t too bad. Play around with this one to bake it through.
epalmer84
I though this was going to be something like the turducken... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turducken
