New to Chairman Position

Welcome to the forums, Amy. I assume you are the Troop Committee Chair and are asking about how to run a Troop Committee Meeting? Running the Troop meeting is the job of the SPL, under the guidance of the Scoutmaster. Running a troop meeting is up to you...you can be as formal or as informal as you need to be to make it work. Robert''s Rules is probably overkill, but a free for all won''t work, either. Depends on the size of the group and the ability of the people to work together. IN most cases, decision by consensus is best. Consensus means, while you may not agree with a decision or get everything you want, you agree to support it and help the group make it work.

Thanks for the welcome. I appreciate the advice and will take it in cosideration tonight at our meeting. I plan on using an open discussion and moderator type of meeting format. There are only 4 people on our committee and not everyone shows up everytime. I have decided to make sure that everyone knows ahead of time when things are going to happen within our troop.

Not only you taking the online Troop Committee Challenge but getting everyone on the committee the complement of training for their positions.

For Committee members I think it its just New Leader Essentials wtih Youth protection training(anyone who has been to the course and has the training materials, availible from your Scout store can run the course) and Troop Committee challenge - you can also do this one online but doing it together might build some team building/ group vision into your committee. This will also help you to have more of your "Trained" leaders for rechartering.

You can also get material regarding each individual position that gives the BSA way each job should be done. And build common expectations by talking through each job with the Committee member that holds it. Remember you aren''t supposed to DO it all just to ensure it all gets DONE.

Take care of the boys by taking care of your Scoutmaster and his ASM''s too.
