FBI seeking help in identifying potential victims of former SM (Omaha, Mid-America Council)

"According to a spokeswoman for the FBI, John C. Shores Jr.,54, of Omaha, was charged via federal complaint with attempted sexual exploitation of a minor and attempted enticement of a minor.

John C. Shores Jr. was an active Boy Scout Scoutmaster and Commissioner for the Mid-America Council for Boy Scouts of America.

The charges are the result of a Douglas County Sheriff’s investigation involving the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force. On August 21, 2023, Shores was indicted on those charges.

The FBI Omaha field office is seeking the public’s help in identifying potential victims. Update Nov 20, 2023:

In a superseding indictment handed down last week, Shores now faces seven total felony charges: Three counts of attempted child enticement, three counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of distributing child pornography. The indictment alleges the offenses took place between July 2020 and August 2023.

The Boy Scouts cut all ties with Shores upon his arrest. Anyone with information about Shores, or who believes their child or another child was a victim of Shores, is encouraged to contact the FBI at 402-493-8688 or submit information online at forms.fbi.gov/johnc-shores.

Update 8/23/2024:

Judge Robert F. Rossiter sentenced former Omaha SM John Shores to 20 years in federal prison and after release, an additional 20 years of supervision. There is no parole in the federal prison system. He also has to pay $7,600 in special assessments.

Shores' attorney argued for a lesser sentence as he had no previous criminal record and would not be a threat to society after his release due to his age.

The prosecution argued Shores acted as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" who used his position in the community to gain trust while seeking out minors for sex. 

Judge Rossiter described Shores' actions as "unfathomable - “I don’t discount what you’ve done with the community in the light, but what you’ve done here was in the dark."
