Troop dues

red feather

Recommended Posts

Our troop charges for:

Registration

Boys' Life (I guess not sure)

16.00 dues

Campouts are paid per event

We fundraise by selling popcorn and have a BBQ in May each year.

We've got about 35 Scouts on the roster

Red, you may want to check out meritbadge.net/phpbb and check in troop issues. There's a long one in there already.

Dues are not the admission price to a meeting. They are essential to the successful operation of the troop. Each boy is responsible for his dues even if he misses a meeting. The troop scribe collects the dues each meeting and records who paid and how much. BSA provides a patrol dues envelope that has a place to record dates and amounts paid. The envelope is turned over to the troop treasurer.

It's a bit of a hassle collecting dues each week and keeping the records. But we're not in the Boy Scout business to simplify and streamline everything for the boys. Dues and collection and record keeping is their chance to learn about their financial obligations. It gives the troop scribe meaningful responsibilities that are essential to running the troop.

The Scoutmaster Handbook has a good discussion about troop finances and dues.

Our troop charges $10.00 per month from Sept - May. This covers registration, and a campout every other month, and a day event on the other month. Adults need to pay their registration fee, and a small amount on the campout or day event. Of course, summer camp is extra. We are a small troop (7 active boys), and just started this this fall. So far, it is working fairly well. Boys must pay the monthly fee regardless of wether they participate in the campout/day event or not.

Our troop charges $80/yr which covers registration, boys life, and dues, paid quarterly. We used to do $1 week dues but decided we were spending too much time at a meeting with collecting current dues and too much bookkeeping time collecting past dues. The troop pays for leader registration and training. Thru fundraisers, the troop covers the camp fee portion of outings; scouts & leaders pay for food.

Our major fundraisers are: popcorn, wreath sales, scout show ticket sales and the odd car wash. Some fundraisers are earmarked for a particular outing (summer camp, etc) and all the profits go to the scouts' accounts.
