RememberSchiff
"Scouting’s largest event in the world — Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) — takes place October 15 – 17. During JOTA, Scouts and hams around the world, around the nation, and in your own community meet on the air via amateur radio. Scouts of any age and sex may participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. The participating scouts often gather at a station made available by a volunteer, or at one set up just for JOTA. Communication typically involves SSB or FM voice, but it’s also possible that other modes, such as video or digital, will be employed — or even repeater or satellite communication." gpurlee
Thanks for reminding us. This is the largest international event that will be done this year. There are many ways to participate as has been noted. And you can receive a cool patch to add to your collection. The local amateur radio operators group has hosted an event with our council for many years. Edited October 13, 2021 by gpurlee
ScouterSD
Troop 1 does normal scouting activities like camping, canoeing, hikes and high adventure. However, we also do STEM activities and one related to Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) is a high-altitude balloon launch. During JOTA 2021 (October 16, 2021) we launched a Pico (very light weight) payload balloon. Call sign W9WWI-12. gpurlee
Welcome to the forum! That sounds like a great STEM activity. Looking at your troop information, you have had balloons circle the globe and sent a balloon up during the eclipse a few years ago when there was totality over your area. I like the hands on opportunities that members of the troop have. And also congratulations on 110 years of continuous service to the youth of your community.
