David CO
I have a few thoughts about this. I have always been aware of the fact that there are many families out there who practice a greater degree of modesty in the home than what I was brought up with. I have no problem with this. To each their own. I do have a problem with the idea that BSA might try to impose a YP rule regarding modesty that they would apply to scouters and their families in their own homes. This idea that BSA's YP rules should apply to scouters at all times and in all places is absurd.

In today's culture being a leader in youth protection means being out ahead of the trends and changing expectations of what it means to protect youth from abuse. You'd like to think that it will never extend to asking you to refrain from certain activities or behaviors with your own family, but then again who really knows. I mean, my troop can't be the only one where there has been a scout caught watching inappropriate material on a cell phone. So when that happens, is it just a teen/tween being a standard kid or is that scout now a possible sexual abuse victim (because someone exposed them to it or allowed them to be exposed to it) that the Scoutmaster needs to report to Council and possibly the Police/Child Services? That said, I won't belabor the point as I have no further comments to make on the issue. I don't have the link handy right now, but during the most recent search for a new superintendent of the school district where I reside, one of the candidates went from being the frontrunner to being disqualified on the basis of two blemishes in his record: (1) he allegedly took off his shirt and performed an exotic dance in front of a younger female teacher when they were the only two people in the building, and (2) while he was coach of the football team, some boys on the team watched an R-rated movie during a school-sponsored trip. Not that he showed it to them, or provided it to them, or even knew about their watching it, just that they watched it.

Given how often porn is used by adults as a grooming technique I would say that may be a good PSA (I'd have to see the exact text)
