Our Governor (VA) has ordered a shutdown until June 10th.  They are still debating how to make up the lost school year...going to school all summer is on the table.

Our schools are shut down for the semester as well, but the DOE removed minimum hour requirements so most schools are ending on time using online learning.  Our school had talked about going until end of June, but several parents in our Troop (including me) will pull our kids from school to attend summer camps if they are open.

Are they not doing online school? NJ DOE designed the online instruction to count towards the 180 days.

Not all students have access to the Internet.  TV says 2/3 of Cleveland Public Schools students do not.  Not all of Virginia is affluent by any standard.

Just my 2 cents but scouting would be greatly served if these kids were the target audience of the post covruptcy BSA.

We have property in a very rural, relatively poor area of PA.  Even they are doing online learning, for the most part.  They have paper packets that are handed out at the beginning of the week for the kids who don't have internet, but I have no clue how they're handling the instruction part.  I'll have to ask my friends out there.  We didn't go out there when this all started because only internet available to us is through satellite dish, or phone lines.  DSL wasn't going to be able to handle three kids using Zoom and a mother-in-law who can't seem to understand the directions to NOT use the wifi when we're trying to stream something!

Crossroads of America Council released this Summer Camp update yesterday:

Quote
With COVID-19 presenting an unprecedented impact to each of our daily lives, the health and safety of all our campers, leaders, and summer staff will always be our primary concern.  Volunteer and professional leadership of the Crossroads of America Council recognize that Scouts and leaders have been planning for months to enjoy a life-changing summer camp experience.

We are hopeful for a great Camp 2020 Summer Season.  We continue to assess our ability to operate within the guidelines of state and local authorities, the CDC, and the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

As the Stay-At-Home order in Indiana currently expires on May 1st, we anticipate receiving further guidance around that time. On Monday, May 4th, we will provide an update on the 2020 Summer Camp season specific to each camp property.

We remain committed to providing high-caliber program opportunities for our Scouting family.  For now, please stay healthy, continue Scouting at Home, and encourage all your Scouts to look out for each other and our communities.

So it looks like May 4th is now the "decision date".

We received a couple emails from two councils who have camps in our state yesterday (seems like yesterday was the day to release updates).

1) Camps are still being planned; however, that can change.

2) Camps will implement additional changes (temperate checks of everyone at arrival, hand sanitizer provided to everyone + at various locations, etc.)

3) Three proposals are in discussion … summer camp schedule with no changes, summer camps to begin July 5 (June dates cancelled), alternate camping/advancement option if traditional summer camps are cancelled.

4) All councils who have camps in our state are meeting to have a common plan for summer camp this year.

5) CDC, state and county health departments are being consulted.

Next update is May 4th.

Camps have closed for the summer due to swine flu or polio and have come back the next summer.

Total infections and deaths were far fewer than covid-19,  but children were more susceptible to polio though adults would contract it too.  Some kids spent years in iron lungs, the ventilators of back in the day. A few used leg braces or wheelchairs for life.

The threat lasted for decades before vaccines were developed.  Some of us grey beards have a round polio vaccination scar, the mark of vaccination, on our upper left arm.

Summer camps,  beaches,  pools, and movie theaters  (popular due to AC)  were closed.

1921:  Some believe FDR contracted polio at a Boy Scout camp (Bear Mountain NY).  A week later he was stricken at Campobello. His camp visit had been as chairman of the Greater New York Committee of the Boy Scouts.

1935: first National Scout Jamboree delayed two years (1937) due to polio.

1943: Lone Tree Scout Camp (MA) which had been dedicated in 1929 was sold, some think for fear of spreading polio.

Sept, 1943: All Utah unit meetings suspended because of polio outbreak.

1945: No summer camping at  Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan  (Wisconsin had a serious polio outbreak in 1944). Camp resumed in 1946.

1950: Polio scare closes Camp Perry.

I'm in VA.  They're very poorly trying online schooling and there's no talk of going back in the summer.

We have a number of students at the school I work at who had neither internet access or a device to use should access become available.

Our local cable company announced that they would provide free wifi for the duration of the school year, to any home with school age students who did not already have internet access.  The district also directed schools to sign out (hopefully to be returned in working order) laptops to those students who did not have computers in the home.  The district also had several business donate money to provide wifi hotspots to students who needed them, as there are a lot of rural areas of the county that do not have cable access in order to take advantage of the free wifi the cable company was installing.

Some of the issues in my kid's school district is either they don't have network connectivity, or they don't have enough computers to share between the kids at home plus the parents currently having to work from home, if they have that luxury.

My daughter's district took the stance of whatever work you can do, can only improve your grade. If any work can not improve it, it is not considered. Those unable to do school work, who can't do it all, or do poorly at it because they aren't used to doing external classroom work, are not going to be penalized for the situation.

Alabama:  Mobile Area Council, Camp Maubila
"The executive planning committee and board made the difficult decision to postpone Summer Camp 2020.
The safety of Scouts and staff is our primary focus and with all of the uncertainty, postponing is the right thing to do.
Units that paid campsite fee deposits will be rolled over to 2021 with their campsite preference noted."

https://bsamac.org/2020/02/12/scouts-bsa-summer-camp/

William Bryant Jr., Mobile Area Council SE, said the situation was more clear-cut for his council than for some: Camp Maubila would have offered one week of camp fairly early in the summer, where some councils operate camps for six weeks or more

In the meantime, from the national level on down, scouting has focused on online activities. May 2 brings a nationwide virtual campout: Streaming programs will be offered all day long, and scouts are encouraged to camp out in their own back yards.

At the other end of the spectrum, and the other end of the state, is the Greater Alabama Council, the Boy Scouts of America unit that covers a huge swath of north and northwest Alabama, including Birmingham and Huntsville. It normally operates major June-July camp programs at Camp Sequoyah, east of Talladega, and Camp Comer, near Fort Payne.

The council’s scout executive, J.T. Dabbs, said “We’re taking it one week at a time.”
