Got rope......

Recommended Posts

If BSA gave you free rein to teach up to 12 knots for your scouts instead of the current list, what would they be tying?

Here's my list....

1. Clove Hitch

2. Two Half Hitches

3. Sheet Bend

4. Figure 8 on a bight

5. Trucker Hitch

6. Tautline Hitch

7. Grapevine

8. Water Knot

9. Garda

10. Pursic

11. Munter Mule

12. Canoe Painter

1. Bowline

2. Clove Hitch

3. Two 1/2 Hiches

4. Figure 8

5. Alpine Butterfly

6. Trucker's Hitch (along with the Figure 8 or Alpine Butterfly)

7. Blood Knot/Half Blood

8. Sheet Bend

9. Square Knot

10. Double Fisherman's (even Fisherman would work)

11. Taut Line Hitch

12. Either the Monkey's Fist or Turk's Head (to keep 'em busy and interested in knots)

Of course these should accompany the full compliments of lashings!

A reasonable list but perhaps a lot of knots for general usage? Hows about a couple of tweaks? Show the clove hitch with an extra wrap around the loaded strand to add some utility; I've seen that called the 'Constrictor Knot'.

Delete the 2 half hitches; just go straight to the Tautline...

And hard to believe that the Square Knot didn't get on there?

I like the addition of the climbing knots; would consider showing some of the options of the Figure 8 family?

But again maybe we're heading down a specialized path ie Garda Knot?

As always my list is merely subjective, and reflect the knots that I use for climbing and canoeing. Backpackers, and others may require a different set of working knots. As for tweaks, these knots will allow for z drags, pulley systems, pig rigs, and various hauling and anchor systems...also, the two half hitches is a must in some simple anchor systems, where as the taut line just wouldn't work. The square knot, as well as the boline are just too weak, and don't hold well in modern nylon rope unless backed off with a safety knot.. About the only other knot that I would add would be the Mariner, since it can be released under load....
