So too the L.A. Times.....Berhow now joins the ranks of Charles Whitman,  Eric Harris, Ted Bundy, and Arthur Gary Bishop.  Non of us are above reproach, we  all have our flaws and shortcomings that feed our inner demons.  Sometimes our better angels  aren't enough to keep those demons in check....

Journalists are so lazy these days.  Twice they misidentified this shooters association with Boy Scouts.  Once calling it a squad and then a team.

It irks me that papers seize the chance to sensationalize something.  I read an article this article the other day and the headline is annoying.   You read the article and it says this: Bellomo - who was well known among the small Minnesota as a volunteer firefighter, award-winning taxidermist and a leader of a Boy Scout troop

But they choose to use his title as a BS leader to put in the headline as click bait.  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7678117/Boy-Scout-leader-34-leads-police-dangerous-20-minute-chase-Valentines-Day-massacre.html

There is no reason to be irked. We promote that we are a character building organization. Scouts and scouters are supposed to be a cut above the rest. Most of them are. Sadly some are not. When that happens, it's a relevant headline in the same way it is to point out that someone accused of arson was a firefighter. It's tragic and ironic.

True.  It just seems like the media is trying to sensationalize things.

Well, they are. But you can't blame a tiger for hunting any more than you can blame a media outlet for trying to sell papers or clicks. The bigger problem is that we have no platform that addresses these headlines. National is basically a corporation and it ought to have more proactive corporate public information responses when things like this happen. Instead it is silent. These cases are tragic but infrequent and do not represent the good that is done by the remaining 99.9% of the organization.  The media tiger eats us alive because there is very little push back.

I actually see this as a positive reference to Boy Scouts.  They specifically call out participation in Boy Scouts because it is so counter to the message and the respect that is afforded Boy Scouts.  there is too much negative publicity because of abuses by Boy Scout leaders.  But despite that, the public perception of youth in Boy Scouts remains very positive.  This entire event is sad and occurs way too often.  But the references to Boy Scouts is all positive.
