Flag help needed

Recommended Posts

We need flags for a new troop & pack.

What size American flag do you use for indoor permanent use (may be carried inside a short distance for the blue & gold dinner)?

Do you use a different flag for parades or camping, if so what size? What size pole is good for parade use? Same size pole for American & troop flag?

What size pack & troop flag do you recommend?

Links! Who do you get your flags from? Any sources are helpful. Thanks!

In my personal opinion, I would not recommend a flag bigger than 4x6' or a pole higher than 5 feet.  The reason is simply one of practicality: how big can kids handle?  If you go much bigger than 4x6, you're going to have flags being dragged on the ground when they carry the flags.

There's been some talk lately about synthetic flags creating noxious fumes when it comes to burn them. Well, if you stick to cotton you can eliminate that problem.

There's also been talk about the hypocrisy of buying American flags that are made in China. Well, it's not that hard to find good quality, American-made American flags....

Here's one that I'd buy:

As always, your mileage may vary...

We went very simple

All are 3 x 5 flags, these are on 8' standard 1" dowels (available at Home Depot).  We stained these

  • US flag was made in USA and sourced locally at the hardware store
  • Troop flag is the new one from wherever they come from
  • State flag is a synthetic, not sure country of origin

Our COR approached us with a complaint that our scouts were damaging the ceiling in the meeting room. Turns out after further investigation that the damage was caused by the Girls Scouts's flag pole tips during flag ceremonies. I'm not sure if there is a standard pole height, but you might check the ceiling height in your meeting room.

As for flag size, it should be at least the size of the troop flag.

3x5 flag. The pole length depends on the room you're displaying it. If it has a regular ceiling (8') then a shorter pole is used. We do have two sets, one for meetings and one for campouts that stay in the trailer. All of our ceilings are plenty high so we have the 7' poles, I believe.

Wouldn't a 6' long flag drag on the ground with a 5' pole? Even a 3x5 flag will drag on the stand.

On a side note,  why does the BSA not offer a flag you can put out front of your home?  I would love to get one to fly with my American flag but I tried searching for something and come up with nothing.   :(

WOSM sells flags with the World Crest that are available for purchase:

The BSA used to sell "generic" flags that you could buy to fly at home, but I haven't seen them in years.

There are BSA flags available on Amazon:
