Pinewood Derby Plaque Mold

Recommended Posts

I offer you my solution knowing it does not match your wish. Our Pack had a similar decision. We needed a cheap resolution to PWD awards.

Another woodworker and I cut out small PWD car stands. Basically there is a base, a mid-post and a top. The base and the top were cut from 1 X 4's. The edges were quarter rounded with a router. The top was about two inches longer than the length of the car and the base was shorter than the top. The mid post was cut from 2 X 4's at an angle.

The base was secured to the 2 X 4 with two wood screws and then lightly sanded, stained-varnished. The top was screwed to the angle of the 2 X 4 with one screw, lightly sanded and stain-varnished.

The stand was then ready for a car. The back wheels of the car hang over the top edge of the top and can be displayed or taken off and enjoyed.

For a small expense, you can purchase trophy strips that read, 1st place, Pack number, date, etc. that has a glue backing to be attached to the top part of the stand below the front of where the car would go.

Total cost- wood was donated, cutting and finishing were donated. The trophy strips were donated. The boys can help to lightly sand and complete the bases and put on the tops.

We made enough for three places in each division, including the adults. My trophy is my car on a base that I built myself but my car was too slow to win. I don't have a trophy strip, mainly good memories of a fun event and an enjoyable project with a few good friends and Scouts.

Like Fuzzy, I'll offer an alternative solution you did not ask for...

I made Pinewood Derby medals each year. 1st, 2nd, 3rd place medals for each den plus the "Open" class (adults, siblings, etc.) Here's how:

I cut up the trunk of my Christmas tree when I took it down. Sliced it into ~1/2" thick medallions, sanded them, and urethaned them. Put in a little screw-eye and laced a piece of leather through it. I used a sharpie to write

                1st                           PWD                 Tigers                          2004

           (front side)                  (back side)

With 5-7 dens + open, that was as many as 24 medals, each one unique and obviously "pinewood" with the bark still on.  Cost was primarily in the leather lacing.

As for the little stands... this is a great idea too. We encouraged the dens to make these things as a den project - it is good for a requirement at just about every level.
