New Sex Abuse Charges

I was just on Facebook and saw an ad from a law firm advertising to attract BSA abuse victims. The lawyers are out there trolling.

WOW. I was just watching Fox news and saw a commercial from lawyers trolling for Boy Scout abuse victims. Brings it up to a new level.

An update: 

Russell Ruth, 34, aka "Captain Rick" was convicted of possessing child pornography including prepubescent images, and sentenced to 80 months  in federal prison. 

He was employed at the Babcock Hovey Scout Camp in Ovid which is operated by the Seneca Waterways Council in New York.  His duties focused on teaching scouts fire building, knot tying and other outdoors skills. He was recognized in 2017 for 25 years of participation at the Scout camp.

The sentencing is the result of investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly.

Ruth had faced up to 10 years in prison.

Given the date of this post and what has come out in the last week or so, I say that you saw into the future.  Unfortunately, the reputation of Scouting is going to take quite a hit even longer into the future.

USAToday Oct 2,2019: The Boy Scouts also opposed the Pennsylvania legislation (extending the civil statute of limitations for sexual abuse survivors). The Scouts and one of its local councils spent $486,505 from 2016 through 2018 on lobbying in Pennsylvania, disclosure forms show. From 2011 to 2017 the national organization spent about $2.5 million on lobbying across the country, according to IRS records.

I'm in favor of a statute of limitations to bring suit. What happened to those kids is a terrible shame; but after a certain point in time, what sense does it make to punish those that had nothing to do with it?

After 30 years, are any of those responsible for the actions or knowledge of the concealment still around?  You're asking today's families to pay for the transgressions that happened before many of my Scouts' parents were even born. We're 2 generations after-the-fact in some circumstances.

This is so much of how I feel in so many circumstances.  I am fine with extending the criminal statue of limitations as that punishes the abusers, but there is likely no one left at the BSA who had anything to do with the problem in most circumstances that seem to make the news.  There is no moral motivation for these suits. The people are gone, the policies have changed, the actual abusers aren't named - what motivation is left but money?
