Gus Grissom and Exploring

Was the late Gus Grissom ever an Explorer? I stumbled across this photo of him standing in front of the Exploring logo, but there is no caption of explanation:

I don't know if Gus was ever an Explorer, but he was evidently a Boy Scout for at least 4 years...here's his scout record card:

Doubt it.  Explorers started in Sept, 1949. At that time, he was a  23yr old WW2 veteran attending Purdue. In 1950, he graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering.

Wow, those were some beautiful cards. I wish we still had something like those today.

For those units interested in learning more about Gus Grissom there is a small, but nice,  Gus Grissom Memorial located at Spring Mill State Park.  Spring Mill is located right outside of Grissom's hometown of Mitchell, Indiana.   The state park is also a great place for scouting units to visit even without the Memorial.  It has a youth campground,  hiking trails,  caves, a cave boat tour, and a very nice pioneer village with interesting building to explore.
