Long Distance Textile Merit Badge Counselor needed

We are really stuck finding a merit badge counselor for the Textile badge. We live in one of the most sparsely populated parts of North Dakota, even our neighboring districts don't have counselors for this badge. If anybody anywhere knows of a counselor for this badge that would be willing to Skype or help out long distance please let us know, thanks!

Hi, welcome.

The counselor must be registered in your Council.

If I may ask, why so determined for one elective merit badge?

"It is acceptable for a counselor registered in once council to approve merit badges for Scouts in another."  - Guide to Advancement.  I believe it's page 45.

Our troop has not done summer camp in council for several years.  We also occasionally travel for specialty merit badges that our local environment cannot accommodate. It would be a great disservice to the scouts to limit their counselors to one council (at least in our area).

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a Textile counselor.

I go out of Council for summer camp too, I figured it was only for summer camps.

My apologizes.

Two reasons we would like to make this badge available.  Our area produces flax and wool and even some cotton and hemp.  Many of our local Scouts live on farms or ranches (many in 4-H or FFA) and have connections to these textiles.  Also the information in the badge would help the Scouts make more informed decisions about clothing selection for outings, especially in this cold climate.

Great! That’s a amazing reasons to do the merit badge!

Some possible solutions:

- How about a adult volunteer in your troop become a counselor?

- Call your Council for a list of merit badge counselors (scoutmaster should already have one)

- Call a surrounding Council and explain your situation

Also, don’t forget they have to sign the blue card, work out the logistics on that.

Do any of the adults involved in these farms/businesses have any connection with Scouting and perhaps could be persuaded to become a Textiles MB counselor? Maybe a parent of one of the Scouts who lives on a farm?  Or even someone not connected with Scouting who might be interested in doing some community service?

Hey Muskrat,

I got a response back from one. He's said he that he isn't a Textile counselor currently; however, he's willing to serve as a counselor. If you're interested, he said he would go and get registered this week.

Yes please, that would be great.  I think I have 2 Scouts lined up already.  Thank you!  I will give you our email: muskratranch@gmail.com
