yeah, I think the key is the "buffering" battery.

I'd guess that there are losses this way due to the inefficiencies of charging first the battery, then transferring that charge.... but the practical usability is more what I think we are after....

It is a battery that you charge at home or in your car it can charge my iphone about 4 times between charges and has a charge meeter on it.  I also weights 7 oz

I also have two of the stick type batteries  that I pick up at the walgreens they are good for about 1 full charge on my phone and weigh about 2oz each so for about 12 oz can charge my phone about 6 times when I am camping with the car near buy i rotate them in my car

Any comments on the Jackery line? Which might be best to recharging a phone in the backcountry? I can usually get my pack pretty light so weight is not that big a deal. Curious if anyone has knowledge of the various types here.

yeah, that's a good point

My 1st anker battery was an older model, 10,000mAh, bought January 2013

used very frequently, almost daily to top off ipads and such, and still going strong....

will charge a phone many times over

so no real need for a solar charger for a weekend or even a week, depending on usage.
