Stosh
I don't think it's much we can do about those glitches that occur between operating systems and browsers. My Firefox on Windows 7 is strange, but works just fine Firefox on Ubuntu Linux. Go figure. NJCubScouter helped me get that one straight after a few bumps in the road. Nothing either of us can do about it. I use Chrome on my Windows machine and Firefox on my Linux machine. Life is good. Faith
Sigh. I can assure you all that, other than the tools necessary to perform the functions of a moderator, the moderators never asked for, and up to now did not know we had, access to any features that other members did not. I do not regard the ability to specify gender in a profile - or even to have a profile at all - to be particularly important in being a member of this forum, or in being a moderator. I have somehow managed to get along for 13 years in this forum, including 2 as a moderator, without it. I would gladly give it up if it meant I didn't have to read some of the snarkiness I have been reading over the past couple of days. I will also say, now that Packsaddle has referred to it, and there has also been some evidence of it in the forum, that it appears that this new software does have a feature that will automatically ban a second account that uses the same IP address as a previous account. Otherwise I would create a non-moderator account to test what non-moderators can and can't do. But I hope you'll all forgive me for waiting for the powers that be to figure out a way for me to do that without violating the very rules I am supposed to be enforcing! Thanks. I appreciate it. Okay, here's the scoop on Linux. I have Firefox on my Windows XP and the editing menu does not come up. I have Firefox on my Ubuntu Linux and the editing menu DOES come up and works fine. It's an older slower machine that works better than my newer PC. Go figure. As the moderators have pointed out, NO they cannot fix many of these problems. They are moderators of the forum, not tech support.. Admins with greater flexibility in manipulating the forum settings may or may not be able to fix many of the concern either. The administer the software, they do not do tech support. However, (not being snarky here) with that being said, hopefully they can pass along some of the information being expressed (yes, gender is not a big issue that everyone has to lose any sleep over). I'm thinking that if the admins can fix it they can pass it along to the software people who are providing this so they know what to fix for future releases. They are not users, they can only speculate what they think the users might want. I don't know if the software developers can even handle many of the issues I have identified, but I have had 15+ years custom programming experience and have had to test hundreds if not thousands of pieces of code to make sure they did what they were supposed to do. And then, depending on on the platform, system software and program combination, not everything can be addressed. Why would Firefox work on Linux and not on Windows and Chrome and IE do just fine. I dunno, and I really don't care. I can make it work. I only passed along what I found out just in case someone up the food chain did care about the issues. If I came across as snarky to either of you, I apologize. I do understand the difference between a moderator and a developer. When I was a moderator for Zynga's forums, I was jumped daily for glitches in both their games and forum alike. All I could do was pass along info. Yes that's off topic but I wanted to say I know how hard it is sometimes dealing with people who gripe about thing out of your control (and would never be my intention here.) I originally thought that I was overlooking the gender option (and had intended on removing my original post if that was the case) but after y'all replied I realized that it wasn't just me. It's not an important issue and I'm sorry if it came across like I was throwing a fit over it. Unless I come across something that bars me from posting or using the forum correctly, I'll keep my nose out of this area. Again, thanks for looking into it and letting me know that it wasn't just me.Y'all have a great weekend.
Stosh
Faith, No need to apologize. You can be assured 100% you were not the snarky one. It's a guy thing. Like most guys, the tendency is to "know it all" and jump in and start working on a project. The situation heats up until the Mrs. comes into the room and suggests that maybe it would be a good idea to "read the Manual/Instructions." It's kinda like the guys won't stop and ask directions no matter how lost they are. I know these things from first hand experience... Well, I made a comment to such things that wasn't appreciated by everyone and I got my ears pinned back. Don't worry about it. I've moderated boards before as well and I know how crappy it can be at times. #73 - Posting was the culprit.
Administrators EmXaN Posted April 10, 2015 Administrators Share Posted April 10, 2015 Stosh I am happy you are now HTML enriched.. No. As per Forum backend settings, we've DISABLED the Posting as pure HTML feature, its neither enabled for Member nor for Moderator group. Reason because, allowing a member to post pure/raw HTML is a dangerous thing which can be used to inject a malicious code. Although the Forum software tries to filter some of the harmful HTML content, yet it is NOT foolproof and this tag CAN be used to steal session cookies, redirect members and destroy the topic view layout, etc. So, yes, it's a disabled feature for now. However, members can use the RTE (Rich Text Editor), that allows them to do anything except posting raw/pure HTML content. Take some time to understand the RTE features. I'm sure you would like it. I'm finding the text a bit blurry. maybe it's a contrast thing or color choice.... It's definitely not my monitor since I've not noticed it with many other sites and local applications..... Please elaborate with some screenshots, so we can look into the matter. What is the timeout on the edit?.. I am looking at my post above and I'm embarrassed over my using the word through rather then threw.. The edit feature was there right after I posted, it even has a little message I had edited it.. But now I have no option to edit.. I guess time is up to correct, I am left to play the fool Standard edit time set for Member group is 15 minutes. They are not allowed to edit their posts after the time lapse. This is to make sure that members have the privilege to edit their content within a reasonable timeframe, yet must be restricted to keep the sanctity of their opinion. I'm a forum profile geek of sorts, I like customizing them (don't ask, I just do, lol.) Is there any particular reason why some genders are hidden and some are not? I can't seem to find where you plug that particular info in (sorry if I'm using the wrong thread to ask this!) The gender profile field has been enabled for members. By the way even the way the website looks varies between browsers. When people are told that the latest forum responses are listed at the right, that is correct for IE and Chrome, but they are listed at the bottom in Firefox. The Latest Posts feature is similar across every browser platform when using a PC or Mac. Here's the screenshot for Firefox, showing it at the sidebar as in other browsers.
Stosh
And here's an example of the latest posts at the bottom of the display using Firefox on a PC. One must always assume that when it comes to computers there are often unexplained glitches. My apologies for misspeaking on the HTML rather than RTF. He got his tool bar with all those functions on it. Any way Stosh I'm glad your thing-a-ma-jiggy is working and allowing you to now do What-cha-ma-call-its..

TAHAWK
The "edit" function seems to cease to work within a couple of minutes. At first, the button is there, but you are told you are not authorized to edit. Then the edit button disappears. As a really terrible typist, that's a minus among the many pluses. Any option to extend the period to edit?
Stosh
I think from the comments from the Admin, he has it set at 15 minutes. Sounded like it was adjustable, but I don't think he'll be inclined to change it unless there are more than one or two stating concerns. I suspected there are a number of flexible settings that can be adjusted by the Admin, gender addition was already taken care of so what I suspected was true. I know the Moderators are limited as to what they can do, they moderate, nothing more, they don't change parameters, that's the Admin's prerogative. Then there are things the Admin can't change. He was adamant that with Firefox running on a PC the new thread listing was on the right. He had a screen shot to show it. I in turn showed a screen shot using Firefox running on a PC with the new comments listed at the bottom. So there are things the Admin has no control over and require the attention of product support to rectify. Edited April 11, 2015 by Stosh
moosetracker
TAHAWK - I'm more concerned with your statement "but you are told you are not authorized to edit", When I have used the edit button, it would let me edit, so that seems a specific difference to you.. Not sure if it is associated with the browser you use or computer, seems like it is a permissions issue which doesn't sound browser / computer related.. But, I could be wrong. Stosh
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and take a wild guess on this one. Once you post you have 15 minutes to make any changes. If your changes take 20 minutes to make, the clock has timed out and maybe at that point you are no longer able to have authority to edit your own post. Just guessing. moosetracker
First time I saw it, I checked to see that I was logged in. I was. I'll try to get a picture. Yeah probably just a gut reaction on your part.. But, if you stop to think about it, you would have to be logged in, because they wont let you edit any posts except for your own.. Definitely as a visitor you could not even post, let alone run around and change everybody else's posts..

However, since the Forum is Responsive (fits w.r.t PC/Tablet/Mobile), the modules running on the sidebars are shifted downwards automatically on a Tablet or Mobile so as to adjust the Forum according to the device width. Moreover, this can also be tested/happen on a regular PC/Mac if you have scaled-down your browser intentionally - whereas scaling it to 100% (1024 x 768 or above) will restore the module to appear on the sidebar again. So, I suspect the latter is the case with you, since none except you have reported this issue.
Stosh
I thought about that as well, but on the same machine running the same display resolution, it's okay on Chrome and Internet Explorer, just not on Firefox. If I'm the only one with the problem, I'll just play with it on my part. I assume it's some setting somewhere that I haven't been able to resolve. I only pointed it out because to assume it is supposed to be working and it isn't is a problem. I didn't have the RTF format arrow either when I was in Firefox, but Chrome and IE had it. The problem arose when no one believed me when I said it wasn't there. When one does tech support, one has to assume that must maybe on the off chance, the user is actually correct. Everyone can tell me 20 times to just click the little arrow in the upper right hand corner and everything will be fine. But when there is no little arrow, one can tell me another 20 times and it isn't going to solve the problem. I've got a work around so I'm fine. Just store this away in case someone else comes along with a similar problem. Have them change browsers, and maybe the problem will go away.
