April-D
Did I miss something or did the BSA discontinue the raingutter regatta boats to only the catamaran style kits? Does anyone know if these will fit a standard raingutter?
DeanRx
They don't really fit a standard raingutter... the boys would have to make the catamarans towards the inside of the rig to fit. However, BSA sells a blow up (mini pool type) raingutter kid that it fits.... its actually worth the trouble to invest in a couple of those for your pack. They are much more stable than a raingutter on a set of saw horses. IMHO
King Ding Dong
A few on the committee were determined to rip a 6" PVC pipe on a table saw but as we got down to the wire my CC just bought the $26 inflatable. The just a bit of wind against the boats is all it takes to wear those boys out. . 10" was long enough. Someone in your pack has an electric air mattress pump. Oh, I learned lesson on paint as well. When the directions say use water based paint, use water based paint. Balsa just sucks up oil.
5yearscouter
Last time we did raingutter regatta we just used the cheapo kits from oriental trading company. the time before that an adult cut out a bunch of wooden parts for the kids to put together boats. Loomans
For the last few years, the pack has been making their own (cheap) boats with foam pool noodles cut into sections, then in half, plus some sort of mast and sail, like a dowel rod and a piece of foam sheet. Better example of engineering than the kits and can be decorated with Sharpie marker for the creative type. Works well with the inflatable track sold by the scout shop. bp_mmitchell
When I was a Cub, both Raingutter Regatta and the Space Derby existed but we never did anything other than the Pinewood Derby. Kind of sad, really, given that the Pack was quite large.

King Ding Dong
10" is long enough? Just had a Spinal Tap flashback. My wife thinks so, though 11" would be better. Someday we will be allowed to edit posts.
