mk9750
How many boys registered? 31 How many boys active? 30 with one completely inactive and to be dropped from the roster in January, one more teetering. How many Patrols? 3 Does your troop go to summer camp in or out of Council? Out, alternating between two different. Does your troop go to Dist/Council Camporees? Only Klondike. Does your troop support FOS? Mildly Does your troop sell Popcorn? If not, what are your fundraisers? Yes, plus yard cleanup, car wash, and pancake breakfast. Does your troop use NSP, FCFY method? NSP Sometimes, depends on size of incoming class. FC Emphasis? I think. The program provides the opportunity, I don't know if that counts. FCFY? We don't specifically recognize boys who accomplish this. Does your troop have a Venture Patrol? Yes, but the current make up of it has gotten a little lazy. They've not done much. Does your troop have a feeder pack? Yes, although they are are smallest source of Scouts. We draw from four other packs, too. How does your troop recruit non-Cub Scouts? We've not put much effort into this. It's one area just ripe for improvement. Has your troop seen your Unit Commissioner in the past 6 months? No. He showed up at a COH in a Scout shirt and jeans 2 years ago, and was embarased with all our guys in full uniform. Hasn't been back since. Is your Unit Commissioner helpful or a pain? N/A Does your troop leaders attend Roundtable? Another area for improvement. The Rounstables are weak, and rather than helping improve them, we have opted out. How many members are on your troop committee? I think we have 23 registered, with 12 or so very active. We have 7 "real" ASMs, and five more who are alumni but away at college now. Is your troop boy led? At yesterday's event, very much so. At Tuesday's Troop meeting, not hardly. Most of our adults would tell you that our boys are not grasping the opportunity we give them to run the Troop. I am beginning to believe we adults pay more lip service to the concept than actually provide the boys the chance to run their own program. Purcelce, Nice idea here. I kind of wish this were the way all of these kinds of topics were presented. Mark

dsteele
It's not well known, but there is a place to register your Troop alumns who are off at college most of the time and who return to the troop when they can. Your registrar probably doesn't know about this either, but it's in the Registration Procedures Manual. The better place to allow them to maintain their registration status with the BSA and still enable them to participate when they can with the troop is actually a district level registration called "College Scouter Reserve." If they register there, they will still receive Scouting Magazine and your council's newsletter as well as maintain their membership with the Boy Scouts of America. DS They will also come off your troop roster and their absence may help send a message to the Troop Committee that the Scoutmaster doesn't have as much help as they think he does. ManyIrons
Great thread idea purcelce! Here's my input plus two additional questions: How many boys registered? 35 How many boys active? It varies, but currently I'd put it at about 28. We average about 20 per meeting. How many Patrols? 4. Now before anyone does the math, let me just say that two patrols just merged and one of those patrols will completely "age/Eagle-out" by next summer. For the rest of the answer see the question on Venture patrols below. For the record, I don't like the configurations of the patrols, but I'm the lone voice in the wilderness. Does your troop go to summer camp in or out of Council? Usually out. We were in-council two years ago, but that's still only once in the past five years. Does your troop go to Dist/Council Camporees? Yes, at least one of the two. Does your troop support FOS? Yes. Does your troop sell Popcorn? If not, what are your fundraisers? Short answer - Yes. Long answer - it's made available, but not pushed very hard. Does your troop use NSP, FCFY method? NSP - Yes; FCFY - No, but I'm working on turning that around. Does your troop have a Venture Patrol? Short answer - No; long answer - we should but we generally have to check them once per meeting to see if they still have a pulse. Does your troop have a feeder pack? Yes. How does your troop recruit non-Cub Scouts? There is no plan. Has your troop seen your Unit Commissioner in the past 6 months? Does bumping into him around town count? Seriously, he's a good guy but he's over-extended with other troop and pack duties. Is your Unit Commissioner helpful or a pain? Well at least he hasn't been a pain (see above). Does your troop leaders attend Roundtable? Yes, but from what I can see it's generally a "high-speed/low-altitude pass". And for the record, I'm usually at the OA meeting or helping with Eagle project reviews. How many members are on your troop committee? I'm not sure how many are actually registered. We definitely have the minimum, but there are usually 8 folks at the committee meetings plus the SM. BTW, Those numbers don't include the COR. Is your troop boy led? Yes, but only for the past 11 months. We've made good progress but have room to improve. Now for the additional questions and my answers: How many assistant Scoutmasters do you have? Short answer - 5; long answer - only two that can be relied on to show up prepared, or let you know ahead of time if they can't make it. Yes, I'm one of the two. Do you know who your COR is and when did you last see him/her? Well, I know his name and I've seen him a half-dozen times over the past year but not at any Scout activities --he hasn't functioned as a COR for several years. What unit number do they wear? They shoudn't wear your unit number because they aren't registered to it.
dsteele
They don't wear a unit number. It's a district or council registration, I'm not sure which. The College Scouter Reserve is much like a district member at large -- no particular unit affiliation and wear silver tabs. Registration simply means membership in the Boy Scouts of America -- all else is simply a method of categorization. DS
