Eamonn
As we get closer to Veterans day. I seen this. I do not know how accurate or if it is even true. Still if it is I have to say "Way to go Colin!!" When asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our Iraqi plans were for empire building Colin Powell repiled "Over the years the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return" Eamonn
Mike F
Eamonn, Good timing! The quote is accurate, but the question (from a former Achbishop) was really one about using hard power (military), versus soft power (trust and values). A report of the entire exchange can be found here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/powell.asp (Take a look - it's worth reading.) -mike
packsaddle
Great statement by a great man. I am sure Powell was not thinking about the war with Mexico, though, a huge land grab by a stronger nation over a weaker neighbor.
Big_Dog
Good post, Also heard that the ambassador from Iraq(b4 the conflict) was grilling Colin and and quipped something about only 10% of Americans even knowing where Iraq was. Colin responded something like yes, that's true, but sadly for you they're all Marines.. Really like that Colin... YCVT bd
