OscarTango
Hiya! Ok so I'm thinking on going into Venturing (have a few months w/ age requirements. However, what's the deal with Venturers being able to carry pocketknifes? Is there a patch like Totin' Chip, Firemen Chit, Paul Bunyan? Is there any requirement or test needed before you can use/ carry a pocketknife or light a fire? Thanks!
John-in-KC
I think the concept is 11 year olds are learning to use knives for the first time; 14-21 year olds have acquired that skill. If you think you need it, take the training, but then use the skill and press on. Remember: Venturing is not a clone of the Boy Scout program for teens. It's got different program and methods. emb021
Totin' Chip, Firemen Chit don't really have patches. they are cards. the patches were created by local scouters to give the little kids who earn the cards something. Any Venturer can earn the Paul Bunyan Award. Its for more advanced skills with ax & hatchet.

Apparently someone in Supply thought these were a "good idea": http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&item=08597 http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&item=08598 http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&item=08599 Note that they are marked "This emblem is not for uniform wear", but since they are flap shaped, I have seen them on the pocket flap. emb021
"Apparently someone in Supply thought these were a "good idea" " Yes, but they did this only after local councils started to make and sell them. Interesting they are marked as 'not for uniform wear'. As you note, because they are sort-of flap shaped, boys usually wear it there. At least until they join the OA... In my day, if you violated the rules of Totin' Chip, you'd loose a corner of the card. If you lost all four you had to re-earn the card. Kind of hard to do that if you're giving the kid a patch... (please don't start on the right or wrong of taking corners...)
eghiglie
Also, if the card is revoked, it puts the boy in an tough spot as he has to remove the flap. We just issue the card, if they buy the flap we're OK with it, but we tend to check them more often for the actual totin chip card.
