buffalo2
Got asked about resources for satisfying the Ranger First Aid requirements - haven't read up on it but looks like the 25 hour First Responder level of training would more than fill the bill. Heard a mention of American Red Cross' basic First Aid and their 'When Help is Delayed' modules, really don't think that they're adequate for the task. We do see a NOLS class come around about once a year but thats a bit pricey for our youth, and a pretty intense weekend building on top of what they may or may not know. So how to satisfy something like this? There are some excellent resources available to us; paramedic trainers, retired military corpsmen/EMTs, and university level educators that would help out with a bit of direction. Some of these folks are capable of building up a syllabus that begins at the equivalent of First Aid MB and looks pretty good, and at the end of this proposed session(s) you'd have some well trained kids that would be much more capable than the Red Cross might turn out. Has anybody worked through this? We certainly can't be the first ones to face it, and anything that these Venturers absorb makes us all that much more comfortable... OldGreyEagle
the core Venture First Aid requirements are First Aid Complete a standard first aid course plus the American Red Cross When Help Is Delayed module or equivalent course. The Elective First Aid requirements for Venture are: Build a personal first aid kit or help build a group first aid kit. Know how to use everything in the kit. Teach another person in your crew, another crew, a Cub or Boy Scout group, or other how to make and use a personal or group first aid kit. Do 2, 3, or 4. 2 Complete a 25 hour emergency first aid course plus the American Red Cross's When Help Is Delayed module or equivalent course. 3 Complete a 45-hour emergency response course plus the American Red Cross's When Help Is Delayed module or equivalent course. 4 Complete an EMT Basic course offered through a local hospital, college, or first aid crew. taken from this website http://usscouts.org/advance/venturing/OutdoorBronze.html Our crew recognizes the Red Cross First Aid Course and CPR registration as meeting the core requirements and the elective requirements are pretty straight forward(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
DDHII
The 25-hour emergency first aid course plus the American Red Cross's When Help Is Delayed is the basic certification course BSA recognizes for the Venturing program. It is also the same certification needed for the Venturing Siver Award. However, whatever class module you choose, Venturers need to be certified in at least When Help Is Delayed at the time of completing the Award. Working with the First Aid Merit badge is fine, however, it doesn't cover the certification requirement of ARC or EMT-B courses.
OldGreyEagle
DD Do you have a reference stating that a 25 hour course and when help is delayed is the basic course that BSA requires? Why would the 25 hours course satisfy the basic course requirement and also the elective requirement? I am confused
k9gold-scout
If you live in an urban area your crew fan hook up with an Explorer Fire unit and many times they will have access to paramed and ermengcy prep. classes and they my wave the fees.
