SctDad
What kind of activities does you chapter/lodge do? One of the other adult adviser's had mentioned that they were looking for somethign to do in order to get some youth interested in the OA again. Something that the youth can do other than just cheerful service working at camp and ordeals. And somethign that they can do to remember about the outings. One more thing that could go a long way would be some cheap suggestions. I know that there will be a lot of chapter campout suggestions, but how about something other than camping. Maybe something that will attract the boys back into the OA.
fgoodwin
Our chapter has a very active dance team that is extremely popular around AOL and cross-over time!
SctDad
The dance team for the Cub Scouts is good, but what I am looking for is something like what kind of things do you do as a chapter/lodge. Outdoor activities beyond camping. I was thinking about seeing if they wanted to do a 50 Miler Trip. There is a creek that runs through our part of the state and it is well suited. ASM915
SctDad, Our Chapter went to a climbing gym one night over Xmas break. the members that attended loved it. Council is offering up a white water trip this July. I see a large number of OA members attending. Not cheap, but all meals are provided. Canoeing, kayaking & biking are other options. Or the dreaded Laser Quest. Just think of the person your pointing and shooting at as a big buck. Promote a picnic/swim this summer. Go indoors for a change. Have a lock-in gaming night. NOAC is having Wii competitions this year. If the guys are interested in dance, how far is the nearest Native reservation? Set up a trip to there. Offer to do a community service for one afternoon in exchange for the elders, if they would be willing, to talk with and teach your members, dance, customs, and how to make some real nice regalia to boot. Eagle92
While not exactly outdoorsy, we did a field trip to Seymour-Johnson AFB in Goldsboro. Although we did encounter some resistance, the PR folks are there only M-F, It helps to have a retired 0-6 in the chapter This year the youth decided to visit Ft. Bragg/ Special Forces museum in Fayetteville, depending upon what we can get ahold of. We also do a pool party in August or Sept to kick off the new school year. desertrat77
Lodge-only events are fun, but effective only to a point. When the lodge is actively, publicly involved in service-oriented activities, it raises the stature of the lodge and increases the interest of scouts who are not OA. Perhaps at the next camporee, lodge members could staff the sign in desk, judge events, and the like, wearing their OA sashes. Or construct and orchestrate the closing campfire. Advance billing could make OA service prominent. Or take on a service project to help the community, making it clear in the advertising the event is being conducted by OA Lodge X, BSA. It will build bonds.
