nolesrule
I think the 6 part of the 100 that were there to watch, not the 22 called out. Besides, she mentioned earlier in the post that there were 4 called out plus the SM. But then, you were asking a question about a 4 year old post anyway. SR540Beaver
Call out is the one ceremony that the Lodge/Chapters has leeway to make their own within certain restrictions and guidelines. Our Chapter has done call out at Camporee for a long time and it is dry, boring and unimpressive. It amounted to the Chapter Chief in regalia standing in front of everyone and calling out names while other ceremonialists in regalia would escort them away. Zzzzzzzz. This year at the Camporee, we actually did an old school ceremony with a script and some mystery and suspense. It wowed the whole district and built some new interest. I would urge troops to do call out as part of a Chapter event if at all possible. Depending on how it is done makes all the difference in the world. shortridge
"including 6 boys in our troop who had just crossed over" How did they get the 15 days of camping and 1st Class if they just crossed over That's easy. Theoretically, it's entirely possible to be OA eligible within just a few months. If you cross over at the Blue & Gold Banquet in February and go camping immediately that month, plus March through June, and go to summer camp in July, you'd have those 15 days and nights with no problem. And with enough hard work and a T-F-2C camp program, First Class should be a snap. Would it be a good idea for an 11-year-old to be elected to the OA? No, in my opinion. But it is possible. John-in-KC
Sorry. Call out. It's so wimpy. I remember my TAP-OUT,, even to this day, and it'll be 40 years next spring. We were at campfire. All of a sudden, KA-WHUMPF!!! on my shoulder. I get picked up, seemingly bodily, by my belt and down we go to Allowat Sakima. This time, not one but three KA-WHUMPFS!!!, and off I get taken to the holding pen, told I'm on Silence, and we wait. Trev, your was a couple years ahead of mine. Was that a pretty similar experience for you? No, today's callouts are shadows. Political correctness has superceced lifetime memories. scoutldr
My TAPOUT was in 1968...that's how I remember it...vividly. Thus began my best years in Scouting.
moxieman
Like John-in-KC, mine was a tap-out, but not so hard as to floor the scouts. The most impressive call-out I've seen was while I was in grad school in Lubbock, TX back in the mid-90's (Nakona Lodge). Chapter Chief and others in regalia show-up at the evening campfire of the district camporee. They call forward all youth who are eligible to be members of the OA to form a circle around the fire and their leaders to stand behind them. In this lodge, those who have been elected are not notified prior to call-out. A lodge member starts beating on a drum and one of the other members in regalia slowly dances/paces around the circle, looking each scout in the eye. Meanwhile, scout leaders will hold a sash over/behind an elected scout. The dancer leaps into the face of the elected and yells: "YOU! HAVE BEEN CHOSEN!" The scout is whisked around to the chief to complete the call-out. The dancer then continues his circuit. He'll go around several times until he sees no more raised sashes. Pity we have to water things down to keep the attorneys at bay.
Eagle92
Yep blame it on the lawyers as it's considered "child abuse" to get tapped out nowadays. If memory serves, Tap Outs got banned around 1990 or shortly therafter. I know I got elected in 1988, and got Ordeal in 1989, and tap outs were still good. Unfortunately I didn't geT the KERPLUNK KERPLUNK KERPLUNK, as I was sick the weekend of the district camporee. Missed out and regret it.
