Does your C-0 provide $$ to operate? Or do you have to fundraise every dollar?

Our CO donates a couple of hundred dollars per year to the Troop. Other than that, we fund-raise for all our expenses.

Our CO, a local Rotary Club, is generous IMO, they provide scholorships to the boys attending NYLT, about 1/2 the fee, upon completion. They provide 2 1/2 camperships to Summer Camp every summer. They will help to finance Eagle Projects, but the boy has to make the ask.

Both Cos provide a meeting place, and a storage cabinet to store flags & library materials. Other than that all expenses are covered by dues, and fundraisers.

Our Troop and Pack are "self-Chartered" by Friends of ###. Our parents are basically our CO and committee. In general it works pretty well and both organizations are strong and growing.

 

The challenge is that we have to find our own meeting places. Troop meets at a church, pack has den meeting throughout the week at leaders homes, and Pack Meeting at a church.

 

We are 100% self funded. Most of our families are funded by a single job and ain't none of us rich, but we make it work well.

Our CO, a Baptist church, gave us $600 as seed money, provided us a place to meet, and bought us a new troop flag (about $200). They are fixing up an equipment trailer for us to haul gear on campouts. At the end of the year, one member made a pretty large donation to the church, and earmarked $3,000 for the troop. Another donated $300. We don't need that much money, but it is nice to have as a cushion. We will be able to provide scholarships to Scouts who might be in need. Two of the boys crossing into our troop in March each sold over $3,500 in popcorn this year, so I don't think we are going to be hurting for funds any time soon.

our co provides us space for den meetings and pack meeting. They also provide us space for Baloo and other training. Besides that we are pretty independent.

Our CO does not provide us with any operating funds, but we do get an annual grant from a local community foundation, with whom we have a very long history, to cover heating and electrical costs at our meeting facility. Otherwise, we pay our own way, raising funds jointly with our pack (chartered with the same CO) by running a nearly 50-year-old annual community fundraising event.

Well, the COs of both Older (OS) and Younger Son (YS) provide adequate meeting space - YS CO provides a gym which is nice. OS CO provides a room belonging to the preschool BUT also provides storage space and an enclosed garage for our trailer (VERY nice). OS CO (MO Synod Lutheran Church) has the troop in their budget for about $500/year - also nice. YS CO (public school PTO) does not. OS troop also has two parents who work for corporations that do matching grants - that's worth about $5000/year. They do some fundraising through participating in food events with a couple of churches. YS troop lives hand to mouth - also does a couple of fundraisers. Neither unit sells popcorn.

 

That said, OS troop is, unfortunately, dwindling in membership - two reasons, IMO - 1) too dependent on a pack from a Lutheran school that now has declining enrollment (and troop involvement w/that pack has declined) and 2) boring program.

 

YS troop is stable, if not growing - two reasons, again IMO - 2) has two public school packs to draw from and actively courts them and 2) exciting program, doing different things every year.
