jduddin
We have come up with an idea to use the Pinewood Derby as a public relations event as well as a fundraising event and I need others opinions regarding legitimacy. The idea is to send a mailing out to local businesses and offering them sponsorships of derby cars. What this would entail is that the cars can be purchased for $25. For this the sponsor would receive a car that they can build, decorate and participate in an "Open" division race during the derby. We think that this could be mutually beneficial to us and the business. We raise some extra money for the pack and the sponsor would get advertising during the event as well as any advertising that would come up from press coverage of the event. Has anyone seen anything similar to this done before? Just trying to get some opinions. Thanks. Jeff
eagle90
Sounds interesting! Coming from someone who likes an occasional trip to Las Vegas or our local Riverboats, maybe you could set up a little book making on the side and really rake it in! JUST KIDDING!!! EagleInKY
We've had businesses donate money for trophies, food and signage (racing themes), but we have not ever done this. You have to be careful about asking for donations. That's against BSA policy.
scoutldr
The rules for fundraising are on the application form for a fundraiser that must be submitted for Council approval. In general, a product or service of value must be given in return for the "donation". Outright solicitation of direct donations of cash or goods is against BSA policy...only Council gets to do that. Run your idea past your DE for an interpretation.
johndaigler
One of the districts in my council is doing this as an FOS fundraiser - no kids, no uniforms. "Business sponsored" cars competing in an open division contest. Apparently a cash bar will be available. jd
