eisely
My wife and I were in Washington DC last week. Among other things we went by the Viet Nam memorial on Friday. There was a huge mob of people there. Every time I visit the wall I look up one of my comrades in arms, Lieutenant Robert Van Patten. Lt. Van Patten was one of several newly commissioned lieutenants assigned to our battallion when it was activated in October of 1966. We deployed as a unit to Viet Nam in May of 1967. In November of 1967 Lt. Van Patten was killed trying to retrieve some injured GIs in a fire fight. For this he was awarded the Silver Star and of course, a Purple Heart. He was a very competent officer, a really nice guy, and a hero. I cannot say that we were close but I always admired him. We must never forget the people like him who gave up all their tomorrows so that we could enjoy ours.(This message has been edited by eisely)
