Merlyn_LeRoy
The headline seems a bit premature, but if the only question is whether L4L is "directly associated" with the BSA, that's pretty certain: http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_9175494 Reviving a long-standing debate, the Los Angeles Fire Commission on Tuesday began preparing to phase out dealings with the operator of its youth Explorer program because of its relationship with the Boy Scouts of America. In a 5-0 vote, the panel asked for a legal opinion from the City Attorney's Office to determine whether the Learning for Life program is separate from the Boy Scouts, which condemns homosexuality. ... The commission backed the proposal asking for a legal opinion, as well as instructing fire officials to prepare a program to replace the Explorer program if it is determined Learning for Life is directly associated with the Boy Scouts. ... Greg Salce, a director with the program, said Learning for Life was founded in 1991 by the Boy Scouts in order to extend outreach to straight girls, gays and lesbians. ... That last comment hardly seems accurate, as when L4L was created, gays (and atheists) still couldn't be leaders for the first few months.

evmori
Another good program gone! More youth left to roam the streets! Thanks!(This message has been edited by evmori)
Merlyn_LeRoy
Did you even read the article Ed? The Fire Dept. is ready to create their own program, and since they operate the current program, it would look about the same. It just wouldn't be conducted through the BSA. GernBlansten
Ed, is LFL a good program because they allow gays and athiests in their ranks or are they a good program despite allowing gays and athiests in their ranks?
Trevorum
As I understand it, the City is uncertain whether or not it's relationship with LFL is legal or not because LFL is a subsidiary of a parent organization that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation. Is that correct?
evmori
Yep Merlyn I read the article. How much ya wanna bet they never get another youth group going? I'm gonna say it ain't happening. Why? $$$$$$$$$$$ + they didn't have one before & if it was so all fired important to then there would have been one! Gern, It's a good program because they try to help youth. GernBlansten
Ok, So having gays and athiests doesn't make the program bad. I wonder what other programs could possibly adopt this strategy? Hmmmmmmmm.
Merlyn_LeRoy
Trevorum, from my reading of this latest article, that *was* the question before, but now it appears they've decided they can't do business with LFL if LFL is connected with the BSA, and the city council is checking on that. John-in-KC
OK, Merlyn, I'll accept that LAFD may decide to employ its own writer-editors and create a youth-serving curricula. I would hope BSA's attorneys closely scrub the products for copyright infringement. That goes ditto for Camp Fire, Boy's Clubs, Big Brothers, and GSUSA. Hey, it's the Angelenos tax dollars that will pay for materials development... One other point: My Council has a "BSA rate" to rent its facilities (camps, COPE/climbing towers, pools and such) and an "outside BSA" rate. LAFD is going to find that if they're not working with some youth-serving organization, they're going to pay more for properties use. More power to them. Trevorum
So, from BSA's PoV, what's the point of LFL? Wasn't LFL created in order to bridge the gap with governmental agencies that can't legally contract with it?
