Advanced Training

Recommended Posts

Wood Badge is the Advanced Training of the Boy Scouts of America.

Powderhorn is Advanced Training in Program Execution for the Venturing program of BSA.

Supplemental Training, such as Leave No Trace, WFA, University of Scouting, Commissioner's College, or whatever is either scheduled by your coucil training committee or by commercial providers.

Check with your District and Council Training Committees, and look at nearby Boy Scout Council websites.

Wish I could help you more.

Your Hawk Mountain Council http://www.hmc-bsa.org/training/index.htm appears lacking in training courses.

Try Pennsylvania Dutch Council in Lancaster. They offer an Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills course this fall:

There are also online outdoor safety courses such as Hazardous Weather at the National BSA website scouting.org.

Taking WFA is an excellent idea. Here are some other outdoor resources in your area.

Princeton University Outdoor Action is a great source of "online" outdoor skills information. I say "online" because 1. there is a wealth of free online information and 2. I don't know how much they open their hands-on training to the outside community.

You may consider attending a Powderhorn Course. Powderhorn will not teach you to ski, scuba dive, climb mountains or Mountain bike, but it wll give you a taste of these items (maybe) and the resources you need to present to the troop the possibilities of doing these activities and where to do them in your area.

Do you get to Cabela's a lot? I love Reading Rocks, the owner is an Eagle

The real questions need to be answered (SMART), sorry the WB TG coming out....

How will advanced training help you? If you want to lead your Troop into high adventure, then the "plan you create" on attending training toward that goal/outcome is a better ticket than just "attending training X".

Remember, if you hang your ticket on the schedule of an outside person/council there may be a scheduling conflict, then where are you in your "plan"?
