Eamonn
I have not been involved with NYLT. In fact most times I get the name wrong! We do have one Lad in the Ship who is also in a Troop. He is very active with NYLT at both the Council and the Regional level. In the spring our Council offered the course over two weekends and later this summer will offer it again as a week-long course. This is only the second year we have offered the course. Last year we only had the week-long course and didn't have many takers. For the weekend course in the spring we had Scouts from other Councils join with our Scouts. Sadly we are using the same youth staff. This does eat into a lot of weekends, in fact a huge amount when you add in the development weekends. I really don't know how this Lad fits everything in. He is a Vice Chief in the Lodge, active in his Troop, in fact just had his Eagle Scout COH, active in Sea Scouts. A really bright Lad who spent a week in Washington DC taking the Presidential Class. He is working on the Ranger Award. Just keeping up with him makes me tired!! NYLT seems to really have captured his imagination, who ever presented the Training for it for the NE-Region at Camp Alpine did a first class job. Eamonn. acco40
Our council ran NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training or Wood Badge for Scouts in my book). My son served as a troop guide last year. This year he was asked to serve as SPL. He really enjoys it. It seems to be a hard sell to most Scoutmasters however. One week of time is a big committment. Other than my son, the current SPL of our troop is going this summer. I curious to get his feedback on the course.
stlscouter
Our council runs 3 NYLT courses with 4 land based troops and 1 pack and paddle troop each session. Yes, the DVD players are packed in pelican cases and so far we have not had many problems (minor dust-leave the dvd in the player and don't open it up. Take the the player out of the case otherwise they overheat) Our first session I was the Program director and was at the beck and call of the youth director-he ran the training sessions prior to and was completely, Completely in charge- AH! NOTHING LIKE A BOY RUN PROGRAM! He did one of the most outstanding jobs of leading that I have ever seen a young man do. I've been Scouting over 40 yrs, man and boy. STAND BACK-LET THESE YOUNG MEN TAKE THIS COURSE AND RUN WITH IT, BE PREPARED AS A ADULT TO WORK HARD IN MAKING SURE THEY GET EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. Eamonn
"STAND BACK-LET THESE YOUNG MEN TAKE THIS COURSE AND RUN WITH IT, BE PREPARED AS A ADULT TO WORK HARD IN MAKING SURE THEY GET EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN" I seem to remember some wise person saying: "Train them, Trust them, Let them lead" Seems that this is a recurring theme. All we need to do now is get the adults on board and who knows we might be on to something? Eamonn
Meechgalanne
I staff on my councils NYLT course. It just finished two weeks ago. It was our second course. It went amazingly well. I was a troop guide/administrator on the course. The scouts were motivated the entire time, and even at the end, the non-enthusiastic outcastish scouts were cheering and having an awesome time. We had a lot of trouble with the camp though. A lot of the things that were suppossed to get done seemed to either never happen or happen late. But we are a strong staff and we overcame the difficulties. We had one troop consisting of eight patrols, two being kosher patrols. I think the guidelines in the course are great. They are very descriptive and not hard to handle. This year, were kept to the time like white on rice. It truly was a great feat. I staffed two training courses before this year, and the course this year has never been so successful before. It could put woodbadge to the test. GNYC NYLT ALL THE WAY!!! drmicrowave72
I have thought about putting together a Troop Guide hand book. The TG are the point scouts meaning the the patrols are with there TG a lot more than a other of the staff. would this be a good idea. Things like let more of problem solving for the TG's. There could be more added to this do any of you have any thoughts. Your in Scouting allways an OWL
SueM
I envy you all who can not only have -1- but multiple courses..we have -tried- to put together a NYLT course together for the past 2 years and have had to cancel due to lack of interest. It's very sad.. Sue M.
Vicki
I'm in the same council as stlscouter and was on the Pack and Paddle staff for the third week of the program. In fact, I believe our SPL was the very same individual as stlscouter's youth director. Truly gifted. This is an unbelievable opportunity, similar to Wood Badge, to provide youth across the council with a chance to see how a youth-led program really can work. This is my second year at it and cannot speak highly enough of the program and the people involved with it. I believe Pack and Paddle may be unique to our council - it's national NYLT's syllabus with high adventure elements thrown in for older scouts. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to share the details, it really does help keep some of the scouts engaged who might otherwise "tune it out".
