OldGreyEagle
As I have commented from time to time on other threads, the Council I serve set an expectation that Cubmaster, Scoutmasters and Venture Crew Advisors all be trained before they could recharter in 2005. That occurred. The one casualty was a Crew where the advisor said he would rather fold the Crew than take the training. The Crew folded. For 2006 the expectation is that all the Committee Chairs will take the training. Seems to be catching on with no loud protests. One of the effects of these requirements is that the training committees have grown in number and experience. The next question is being brought to the Exectuve Board of the Council. What's next? Require Asst leaders to be trained? Committee Member's? I think it should be the Charter Organization Representatives, these are the folks with the most power in the BSA, and many have quite the lassez faire attitude towards their units, at least from what I conjecture from here. So, how hard would it be to get your COR trained? In COR, not basic leader essentials, just to be an COR
SemperParatus
Our COR is trained. It helps that she has a son in the unit and is active. Good luck on the MIA COR.
schleining
First- The so called leader that chose to fold a crew rather than get trained... WHAT A Self centered bone head! Another leader should have stepped up and took the Crew and invited the clown to leave. How dare he put himself before the Scouts... That turns my stomach. Second- All leaders should be trained to include the CO.. ours is trained, it helps him better understand the whole program and outlines his role within the Troop and Chartered Organization. To to sound cliche- but Every Scout deserves a Trained leader. it can only enhance the program and give the Scouts a better Scouting experience. WOW- I am still fuming about the flake who let a crew die... that is just not right. Oak Tree
I think many CO's are happy to provide a place for the Scouts to meet, but don't really see a need to get more involved than that. We've never had a need for our COR to do anything more for us. He's been helpful with everything we've asked, but I'd feel very awkward going back to him and telling him that now he has to go to training. Of all the people in our unit, he's really the last one I'd worry about - everyone else has significantly more to do than he does. And I'm sure there are other units where that's not the case, but that's just my perspective. Oak Tree
schleining
I am happy to say that we have a great CO. And our CO Rep is an outstanding Scouter. He is an Eagle Scout and sits on our Troop Committee. He reports the the CO about all the great things the Boys are doing and when we need help either Financially or in man hours the CO is always there to help. This Sunday our Troop is holding a "Scoutmaster Breakfast" Fundraiser, a bunch of the men from the CO will be there at 6:30 am to start cooking while the Scouts set up table etc. They are a great group of guys and we are happy to have them on our Charter. Being Chartered by a Catholic Mens group (the Knights of Columbus) our leaders are screened by the CO first and then they all have to be screened thru the Archdiocese to be able to serve as an Adult leader. This is nice, because as a Scoutmaster I am confident that the leaders we have working with the Boys are good to go. The CO also puts additional rules on us regarding Youth protection and procedures for camping and travel. This is their right as a CO, and we are happy to add their input to our program. Training is the least thing that disrupts a committed Scouter. It is the least we can do for the Scouts. Jerry
Eamonn
OGE As you know I am not for mandatory training. If someone wants to spin off that's fine. I wish we could do more to get more of our COR's to do what they should or could be doing. If we were to allow Scouting Groups, by that I mean we go all out for the seamless program and allow the pack, troop and crew to all be on one charter and then make the COR more of a Group Leader, a uniformed position with almost the same responsibilities as the COR has now, but with the idea that he /she would meet regularly with the Committee Chairs, the Unit Commissioners and attend the District Committee meeting. Life would be grand!! While we are at it we might want to try and get the idea of stewardship. Sure things might be fine now, but we are only passing through and we want our packs, troops and crews to remain strong long after we have gone. What's that they say about Fishes and Wishes? Eamonn. frank10
We spent a few hours explaining to the IH exactly what it ment to be a chartering Org. At the end she declaired she didn't want to do that. Almost lost our troop over that. As luck would have it, she moved on before she had time to do the damage. Now I smile and hand them forms to sign.
