Wood Badge Ceremony

Recommended Posts

I'm very close to completing my ticket (Go Bears!). I've passively attended two bead presentation ceremonies. One was during our troop court of honor. The boys COH somehow became the SMs Wood Badge ceremony which totally overshadowed the event. The other ceremony was during the closing campfire of my SLF course. Both occured before I really knew much about Wood Badge.

My Wood Badge patrol consisted of me and five others from a different district. They all told me that most of their WB ceremonies happened at their monthly Roundtable. I've attended my districts roundtable for the past five years or so and have not seen one WB presentation there.

Sorry for rambling on but I just wanted a few suggestions and toughts about the WB ceremony. Any thoughts?

The last 3 (three) WB ceremonies that I attended where at troop meetings.

The aldult scouters whow showed up where there patrol, various people from the district. Seeing the WB ceremonies impressed the scouts and there parents.

I have seen Bead presentations at District Dinners, Troop meetings, after a closing campfire at summercamp, and some that were just their own ceremony. Mine will be presented at a Wood Badge reunion gettogether. I agree with you that a COH should be just for the boys and a WB presentation could take away from that.

There are lot of Wood Badge Ceremonies on the net. I have attended a good many.

My thinking is that it is your Wood Badge, so you plan the Ceremony.

I do like the boys to see that the leaders are still taking Training and learning, even if they are really, really old, some of them are 40!!

I have been involved with WB presentations in three councils. In each we left the where and when up to the recipient. We had a scripted ceremony that was followed. Like with the boys we sometimes presented the beads more than once to the same person. Rountables, Camporee campfires, WB dinners, District Dinners, Council Dinners, Troop Court of Honors, Blue and Gold Banquets, all were used for WB presentations.

I do agree, that a Eagle Court of honor, belongs to the Scout, and is not the place for a "Beading"

While I have never seen one or done one at a troop court of honor, I think if the Patrol Leaders Council, said it was fine with them, I wouldn't have a problem, after all it is a Troop Court of Honor. It does give the parents a chance to see that the Leaders they entrust with their sons are doing everything that they can to do the best job possible.

I don't think there should be more adult recognitions at a troop Court of Honor, but I have always made it a point to include one or two adult recognitions.

It's important for that parents, committee members and adult leaders be recognized for their efforts. Scouts feel a sense of pride and common bond with a parent that gets praised for their work. Volunteers need an occassional public thank you to keep them motivated, Parents need to know that leaders take additional time to develop their scouting skills in order to give the scouts a better program.

So go ahead and include the adults that help make your unit go they earned it and it's good for the future of the unit.

Our Ceremonies are at the Roundtable, unless the recipient specifically requests an alternate location. To me this seems to be the appropriate place, since the Roundtable, at least on the Cub side, is like a Pack meeting for the leaders. It also serves a great way to encourage other leaders to earn their beads.
