New Hiking Rules/Certification

One of the downsides about reading this forum is a person tends to pick up a lot information not known to every scouter. So, our Scoutmaster called to ask if I knew about a new safety program, akin to safe swim defense/safety afloat but dealing with hiking. He said he heard rumors about such a thing and wanted to know if I had heard of it since I am generally up and accurate with my information. So, not as to let him down, does this sound familiar?

OGE,the only thing I know is about the Leave no Trace training. Haven't heard about a safe hike training, but will ask around.(This message has been edited by EagleWB)

The only change I heard of is effective 1 Jan 03, 1 leader on a pack/troop/crew outing (Local Tour Permit or National Tour Permit) must be Youth Protection Trained.(This message has been edited by shemgren)

OGE on the link provided by evmori under camping, for Trail Safety it just mentions common sense and first aid, but under Trek Safely it has "All backcountry treks must be supervised by a mature, conscientious adult at least 21 years of age who understands the potential risks associated with the trek. This person knowingly accepts responsibility for the well-being and safety of the youth in his or her care. This adult supervisor is trained in and committed to compliance with the seven points of the BSA's Trek Safely procedure. One additional adult who is at least 18 years of age must also accompany the unit." I haven't heard about this training but it looks like most might be covered under Expedition Planning. Has anyone else heard of Trek Safely?

Trek Safely is a section of the Guide to Safe Scouting that was added in April of 2002.
