Webelos Specific Programs at CSDC

Spun this off the Webelos thread. In my quest to create an awesome CSDC program I ask What would you do to create a program for Wbelos of both levels. Goal is to have at least 4 dens: Wolves, Bears, Webelos 1 and Webelos 2. If we are lucky we can add a TC den, but know they are few and far between in my area (only 2 last year)

I know one future WDL has proposed working on OUTDOORSMAN and FORESTER. I'm a bit old fashione dand think READYMAN should be in there somewhere.

All ideas greatly appreciated.

Short,

HEHEHE if we go that route, I will be trying to get the district's WFA Instructor to do that, or the venturing crew that handles first aid. Would use our soon to be certified EMT, but he works shooting sports. :)

PLEASE KEEP THE IDEAS COMING!

In our district we do a 2 year rotation of scientist and engineer on year 1 and artist and showman on year 2. All the pins are optional so it's not a big deal if only half a den goes to camp.

If you do required badges then the den leaders will have to catch up the boys that didn't go to camp for whatever reason. It's a real pain to have to repeat info for the ones that missed it. Even though it's a good review the boys don't see it that way. There is also the risk that a new boy will join in either grades 4 or 5, it happened to me this year with my Webelos I den. I feel bad for the new kid, he's 7 badges behind the rest of the den ( we did CSDC and had 4 informal meetings over the summer). Luckly everything we did was optional, so he's not really all that far behind.

Our program has doubled the number of Webelos in CSDC in just 2 years. The litte guys can't wait to get to the big kid camp now. And now the big kids aren't causing trouble because they're bored doing Wolf stuff. Our Webelos program is now wait listing kids.

Good luck.

CSDC always has archery (and other shooting sports, as possible). Usually, the Cub Belt loop is "automatically" earned. Make the effort for the Bears and Webs to earn the Sports Pin. Usually means coming real early to help set up the range, and other extra stuff.

Forestry: Contact the local State U. and see if they have a forestry department, ask for some special help there. A real Timber Cruiser from the State Environmental Department. Would your camp site allow a portable sawmill setup? Look in your phone book or penny paper for firewood sellers for a contact. Local extension office can help there too.

Thinking about this a bit more ... in my experience, it's sometimes very tough to differentiate between the 1st- and 2nd-year Webelos. Their experience levels are due more to their den leadership than their age - some 1st-years will come in knowing every knot in the book, while other 2nd-years have a deer-in-the-headlights look.

That said ... you could toss in some hands-on, basic LNT stuff for the 2nd-years - rigging a bear bag, building a mound fire, etc. Any kind of simple cooking is good, whether reflector ovens or foil cooking.

If you really want to do the Readyman program contact your local PAID fire department. We have a Dad in our den who is a LT with the FD Search and Rescue...he set up our Readyman for our Webelos last year...it was Awesome!!

They will be able to provide equipment and demonstartions with trained personel to answer any and all questions...as well as show proper techniques for emergency situations.

The FD is used to doing these sorts of things all the time.
