momofcandj
OK there are a bunch of exercises listed for part 5. From my son's book it reads "Do as many as you can of the following and record your results. Show improvement in all of the activities after 30 days." Then it lists a through e with different things like sit ups, push ups, pull ups, etc. Does this mean they must do all 5 exercises or can they skip one? We don't have access to a pull up bar. And that is the one that the parents are complaining about. But the boys really want to do this Activity Badge. Thanks
ManyHats
Do they do pullups in PE class at school?
momofcandj
3 of the 5 do. We have a unique school situtation here. One recently switched to a different school. The 3 that do are in one classroom. We don't have a PE class or teacher, but the teachers are responsible for giving them PE. The one class does pull ups on occassion not a regular basis, runs, plays soccer and other sports, run the track, they really get a workout for 4th graders. The other kid, his teachers idea of PE is more like a recess with access to some sports equipment. They are on the same campus but one is traditional school and one is charter school. The one that just switched schools I will have to ask the dad about that. My understanding was they should do the exercise for 30 days, not necessarily every day though. Im not sure how long that would take them through school. We could probably use the schools pull up bar, as it is outside. But its the opposite end of town from the normal meeting place. I suppose this would be one of the ones the boys would have to really get the parents to help with getting to the pull up bar location or coming up with their own family plan. ScoutNut
Most playgrounds have something that would work as a pullup bar. Most communities have a number of playgrounds. Some families might even have one in their own yard. The boys can go on their own after school, or on the weekends.
Troop185
We have used a branch on a tree!
gcan
No, techincally you don't have to do the pull-ups. BUT, IMO this badge is a lot more fun to earn at the park, where you can not only do the 50 yard dash (#7), but can find some kind of pull up bar. I can't find my lesson plan for this mtg, but we easily did all these things at the park: sit ups pull ups push ups long jump 1/4 mi high jump 50 yd dash find pulse target HR check in 15 Warm ups Some of them can count toward the belt loop/pin, and since you have to warm up/ cool down anyway, if you discuss WHY you complete Pin #4, if you help them find thier pulse, count it, and check it again after, you get BL #2 and pin #2. AND, if you get them practice 3x a week for 4 weeks, and remember to write down what they did, you will complete BL 3 and Pin #6. Don't forget to discuss the character connection before and after! I did a spreadsheet with all the boys on one side, the skills on the other, and gave each kid 2 lines for the beginning and end of the 30 days. This worked great for both Web. dens I had, AND the boys had more than enough energy to do it all and still want to run around on the playground, lol. ScoutNut
Actually, you DO have to do the pull-ups. The requirement states - "Do as many as you can of the the following and record your results. Show improvement in all of the activities after 30 days" It does not state - 4 of the 5, 3 of the 5, or which ever ones of the following you want to do. As a matter of fact, it states - "Show improvement in ALL of the activities after 30 days". All means all.
