let's start with httP://www.topozone.com

Your local backpacking store may have some.

More importantly, the USGS works with local business partners to sell true 1:24K and 1:62,500 scale quads.

There used to be a USGS pamphlet on how to read a topo map, but I'm not quite sure where it is anymore. You might want to check the Boy Scout Handbook or the Orienteering MB pam, or maybe someone else will post that link for you.

Have fun teaching this to your Cubs!!!

The US Geological Survey topographic maps can be ordered on-line at http://store.usgs.gov/ . As much as I like computers, there is nothing like the "real" paper map in your hands.

Click on the Enter USGS Store link and then click on the Map Locator (the map graphic). Click on the map to zoom into your area of the country. As you zoom into your area you'll see the topo map names shown in green type and green lines that distinguish the edges of the 7.5" maps. Click on a green map name and you'll see more detailed info and a tiny view of the map. Click on the icon to place the map into your cart. Repeat this process for other maps in the area. The cost is only about $6 per map. A great deal. They ship the maps rolled in a cardboard tube and they typically arrive quite promptly (a few days).
