suzan
Wolf cubs must complete a conservation project for both World Conservation Award as well as for the Leave No Trace Award. Can the same conservation project count for both? We have a couple of parents who think we should only do one and count it for both. They feel that it is redundant to do two separate projects. I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!
OneHour
Unless it is specifically stated, then I don't see why not. For example, usually if a beltloop is a requirement for a Webelos pin, the handbook will state specifically such as " While you are a Webelos Scout, earn the Academics belt loop for ..." or one of the Arrow of Light requirements: "With your Webelos den, visit at least * one Boy Scout troop meeting, * one Boy Scout-oriented outdoor activity. (If you have already done this when you earned your Outdoorsman activity badge, you may not use it to fulfill requirements for your Arrow of Light Award requirements.)" The Leave No Trace requirement is : Participate in a Leave No Trace-related service project. The World Conservation Award requirement is: participation in a Den or Pack conservation project. There is no stipulation that they can't be the same conservation project. Of course, it is always better to have the boys exposed to as many conservation services/projects as possible. After all we pride in ourselves as a service-oriented organization. 1Hour
johndaigler
I think there's a bendable line. Optimally, I'd choose separate service projects in this instance. But, the reality is that it's extremely complicated to spring the boys for one, let alone two. I might try to rationalize it and explain it to the boys in such a way that it seems like you're doing the work of two separate projects. I know, . . . that borders on hypocrisy, . . . but the alternative is to draw dark lines in the sand and I don't like unbending rules all that much. Good Luck! jd
anarchist
Hi! I'll just jump in here with my boat load of negativity! I am one of the tough nuts on this topic not one of the feel gooders... I firmly feel that each achievement, activity or rank 'sign-of' is just that... an 'each'! I find something inherently wrong with letting boys take two 'credits' for one effort...Is it wrong? Probably not...but a better question would be ...is it right? It is 'double dipping'... sorta like getting paid twice for doing one job. If our program is about character and doing right (rather than positive strokes and feeling good about ourselves) What is the harm in saying TWO AWARDS = TWO PROJECTS???? Expediency? Efficiency? Just what do we want the boys to learn here? I know it is hard to find time, it is hard to get the boys out for two projects with all the other things in their lives...but isn't that the point of all this??? just muddying the water some...
