scoutmom24
Ok, here's the problem. Last year when my Bears bridged up to Webelos, the pack bought books for them (actually for all the bridging boys). We didn't know that new books were coming out this summer. Now, I have 1-2 new Webelos in my den, with the new books, with new requirements. Advice any one?? The new books require more on some activity badges. Do I make all the boys earn according to the new book? Do I use the old book and ignore the new requirements, even though a couple of boys have the new books? Do I have 2 standards depending on which book the boys have? Should I try to find some old books for the new boys?? Help! I've done Web's 2 times before, with the "old" book, so I'm very familiar with it and its requirements. TIA
Twocubdad
Howdy! You probably know this, but the old books are still valid for another year. The boys who began with the old books can finish with them. I don't really understand your situation. Do you have a Webelos II den with a couple new Scouts with the "wrong" book or do you have a mixed den of both Webelos Is and IIs? If it's the former, I'd probably go with the old program and help the boys with the new books make the translation -- maybe photocopy pages out of the old book if it's too confusing for them. If it's the latter, the Webelos Is should probably be using the new requirements. It will be a little bit more effort for you, but you can run programs such to cover both sets of requirements. They really aren't that different.
scoutmom24
And actually, so far, I only have 1 boy who is new to scouting. The other new boys are transfers. I told the new scout to try to get the older edition. I know it won't be hard to deal with both sets of requirements, but just wondered if anyone else had ideas/input about it. We had a meeting tonight and it was great!
Fat Old Guy
I would look at this from a fairness issue. Is it fair to ask two boys in the same den who are working on the same badge to meet different requirements?
scoutmom24
in my head. I really like some of the new requirements, esp for the Outdoorsman and the others that look like they will better help prepare them for bridging up to the Boy scouts. I think what I'm gonna do is used my spreadsheets to make a chart, with the new requirements on it, for each activity pin and Web requirements etc. And I'll cover all the old and new stuff for all of them. I think it's all good stuff to know and be exposed to and really just "fleshes out" the program. They're camping this weekend with the pack and the troop is running events. (I had to come home overnight to let the dog out, haha). Thanks for the help.

eaglewings2002
I use the old book myself, as do most of my boys. I did not know there were really any differences, other than the page numbers are different - I did know that they would be allowed to use the old ones till they were done. Am I going to have to pay for a new book so everything is EXACTLY "fair"? When I plan a badge activity from the old book, I assume it is also in the new book. We do not have the funds to run around buying new books - uniforms - or whatever, whenever they decide to "upgrade". This really sort of ticks me off. Bob White
It's really not a matter of fairness. it's not like the new handbook is more difficult it is just different. You should have no difficulty using both books at the same time and just have the boys do what is in their own handbook. The other option is to do as twocubdad suggested and reproduce the requirements from the older book and give the scouts with the new book a set of the older requirements to follow. But don't fret the fairness thing it's not unfair to do whats in your own book and scout advancement has never been about doing what the other guy is doing or doing it the same.
