PETAL_MS_SCOUTER
Anyone out there have access to building plans for a Webelos crossover bridge?
P_Swigs
The Webelos crossover bridge doesn't need to be extravagant. The bridge should be used in a ceremonial way, with emphasis on the meaning of crossing. Therefore, a bridge can be made nearly any way you would like. I would, however, utilize the woodworking talents of parents in your Pack to make it as special as you can. You could even have a Webelos den assist. As an example, you could make it about 6' wide with a rustic appearance, complete with handrail. I encourage you to make it without a step up, allowing boys that may have a handicap or trouble walking to go over it without problems. Just make it a sort of ramp with the bridge about six inches high in the middle, tapering down to zero on either end. Once it's done, come up with a special crossover ceremony to make it a truly special event for the Webelos. You can also utilize the bridge for a ceremony in which the Tigers "crossover" into Cub Scouting.
Skywalker
P Swigs is correct. It does not have to be extravagent jus t special in meaning to the boys. I have heard of some packs having outdoor ceremonies with actual bridges. The CM escorts the boys one at a time to the middle of the bridge where the receiving SM is waiting. We made an indoor monkey bridge out of landscape timbers. I see you are up in Petal. Our Pack is in Poplarville MS. If you are going to Univ of Scouting on the coast next month, look me up & we'll talk.
FScouter
Our Scout troop built a bridge for the Webelos bridging ceremony. We used the Single Trestle bridge described in the Pioneering merit badge book. We built and used the bridge indoors, so modified the design slightly so it wasn't quite so tall. I would suggest building it yourself first to work out the bugs, then turn it over to the Boy Scouts to build. If you want to be real simple, just use two 2x12 planks supported by a cinder block in the middle. The point is that each boy gets to walk up one side and down the other. They don't need extravagant to get an ear-to-ear grin.
