Gone
I have a few questions... - Has anyone been to Big Bend with their Scout Troop? Comments? Suggestions? - I have heard a rumor that due to current border issues (as of Aug 2011) the Dept of Homeland Security has put out an advisory on visiting the park and that BSA has stated they do not want Scout Troops visitng the park. However, I can find nothing specific on the DHS or BSA site regarding this alledged restriction. Any one here heard of this?
Curious
You might try contacting the park itself and discussing your concerns. The contact information is on their website: http://www.nps.gov/bibe/index.htm
Gone
Thanks. Did that. They report no issues but have "advisories" in place. They have no knowledge of BSA issues and referred me to DHS.
Curious
Well, if speaking with the park ranger didn't help, you could try contacting the BSA council that serves that area. It looks to be Buffalo Trails Council. Although, Yucca Council looks like it might be closer to the park. http://www.buffalotrailbsa.org/ http://www.yuccabsa.org/ Maybe someone on staff could provide more knowledge about camping in the park. Good luck with your efforts!
dennis99ss
Instead of Big Bend, look at Buffalo Trails Scout ranch. It is a bit further from the border, and has trails that rival, if not more advanced than Philmont. (never done Philmont, but that is what I am told) They also have horse programs, throughout the year, etc. and are about an hour away from the McDonald Observatory.
